Stanly County loves the sporting life and as participants and spectators they find plenty to satisfy that love. But being the well-rounded folks that they are, they also love cultural events. And they love to share their enthusiasm for both these activities with visitors.

Let’s start with sports participation. We have the Uwharrie Running Club that puts on more running events than anywhere else in the region. The Uwharrie Wheelmen is for all those that share a passion for cycling whether recreational or competitive. The Uwharrie Hikers provide opportunities for regular hikes and outings for those who love the outdoors. Our lakes provide boating, water sports and fishing, and the visitor can even borrow rods and reels from the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department. Our parks provide opportunities for camping and hiking, and did we mention the area golf courses?

We also love spectator sports and this weekend provides several opportunities. On Thursday, the Pfeiffer Women’s Basketball team takes on the women’s team from St. Andrews at 5:30 pm on the Pfeiffer University campus. At 7:30 pm, the Pfeiffer Men’s Basketball team takes on the men’s team from St. Andrews. Take a trip to Misenheimer to support the home teams.

On Sunday, the Stanly Community College’s Men’s Baseball team will take on USC Lancaster at 1 pm. The game will be played at Don Montgomery Park. Come on out and support those Eagles.

Now for those cultural treats. On Friday head for downtown Albemarle when the Falling Rivers Gallery begins its two-week Jewelry Show and Sale, From the Heart. In a Stanly News and Press readers’ choice survey in 2011, the Gallery was chosen as having the most artistic jewelry. Many of these local artists will have their jewelry on display during this show and sale. The items are varied, beautiful and one-of-a-kind.

The Falling Rivers Gallery is a cooperative sales venue of the Stanly Arts Guild and is staffed and managed by volunteers who show and sell their creations that include paintings, textiles, wood, bronze, jewelry, pottery and much more.

The Stanly Arts Guild also sponsors month-long shows in the lobby of the Agri-Civic Center. Throughout February the work of nature photographer Dan Wray will be on display. Dan's first love is nature photography, but he has worked as a self-employed photographer, and is represented by The Image Works in Woodstock, New York. He has published photographs for commercial, advertising and wedding venues. His interest in photography began with film cameras, but now he works with digital including small format cameras. Dan makes his home on the family farm in Mount Gilead, North Carolina where he now specializes in finding a wealth of subjects to photograph close to home. Drop by and see his show.

There are a variety of activities offered by Stanly County throughout the year. They include International Horse Trials, wine festivals, tractor pulls, theatrical events, sporting events, and much more. For unique entertainment there’s the hugely popular Badin Road Drive-in Theater and the monthly Oakboro Cruise-in that, in the summer months, includes the one-of-a-kind Burn-out.

Staffed by volunteers, the Cruise-in began in 2004 to help re-vitalize Oakboro’s downtown. It surpassed all expectations and is now the largest event of its kind in North Carolina. It is held on the fourth Friday of every month.

This Friday, the crowd will start gathering around 3 pm and by starting time at 5 pm the downtown streets in Oakboro will be lined with a variety of unique old cars and trucks. There are food vendors, musical entertainment and lots of photo opportunities. Depending on the weather, anywhere from 350 to 500 cars will show up to show off their gleaming chrome and immaculate paint and interiors.

Save the date of the fourth Friday in April when the Burn-out event joins the Cruise-in. This starts at 9 pm and features the unexplainable fascination of watching cars and trucks with locked brakes spin their tires until they quite literally burn. Smoke rises and the crowd cheers. On the fourth Friday of the month on a warm evening in summer as many as 6,000 spectators may well turn up for this dual event.

Basketball is the name of the game in Misenheimer this Saturday as the Pfeiffer Men’s and Pfeiffer Women’s Basketball teams take on their opponents in the Pfeiffer University gymnasium. The women take on Belmont Abbey Women’s Basketball team at 5:30 pm and at 7:30 pm the men take on Belmont Abbey Men’s Basketball team. Take a ride out to Misenheimer to cheer on the local teams.

Now here is a Saturday event that may require some preparation; a 19.7 mile run from the Albemarle YMCA to the top of Morrow Mountain…and back. Starting time is 5:30 am. The well-named Fellowship of the Idiot Run is one of the most scenic runs in the Central Piedmont region so be sure to bring your camera. There is no charge to enter, but donations are welcome and go to local charities. First timers earn a free Fellowship of the Idiot t-shirt upon completion of the run and a certificate that officially certifies them as an idiot. Runners are asked to respect the distance to run and to be sure they are in shape. For those truly dedicated runners this is a great last long training run before the Myrtle Beach Marathon in February where many of our local stalwarts compete.

For the rest of the weekend there’s hiking and fishing, weather permitting, and if indoors is more to your taste at this time of the year there are plenty of shops and restaurants to try. We also have walking trails, antique trails and winery trails to explore. Come and find your own favorite trail right here in Stanly County.

There’s a Run for Everyone in Stanly County

From the January Idiots Run to the December Mayan Doomsday Run, and from a run to the top of Morrow Mountain to a jog around a few city blocks, Stanly County has an event to suit every runner’s taste.

“We have the most diverse activities for runners of any county in North Carolina,” says Peter Asciutto. A dedicated runner, Asciutto is owner of the Vac & Dash shop on Albemarle’s West Main Street. The shop also serves as headquarters for the Uwharrie Running Club.

Peter Asciutto opened the Vac & Dash store in 2004, a few years after taking up running to improve his health. Races were few and far between in Stanly County and Asciutto understood the need for incentives to encourage runners to keep up their training. In 2005 he began the Uwharrie Running Club. He and fellow running enthusiasts went to work.

Prior to 2005 the county held two running events. In 2012, Stanly County will boast 22 diverse running events in and around the county plus a program for beginning runners called Running 101. Runners come to participate from all over the region and, in the case of some of the events, from all over the United States. The 5K Beach Blast Run in 2009 and the 2011 Run the Valley half marathon were designated by the North Carolina Roadrunners Club of America as State Championship Races. Several of these races are free and many are for charitable causes. The Uwharrie Running Club has raised over $5,000 for local charities that includes $1,500 for the Community Care Clinic. All events are staffed by volunteers.

“We have runs ranging from one mile to 19.7 miles and from free races to theme races,” says Asciutto. “Stanly County is a fun place to run given our hilly terrain and quiet scenic routes, and we’re lucky to have support from state and local parks and from some generous corporate sponsors.”

There’s a social side to all this activity. Friendships are formed locally, connections made with other running clubs and support given freely and generously. Volunteers man roadside water stands offering cups of water as the runners pass by. Others shout encouragement from the pavement or cheer the first through the last runner to cross the finish line. Racers include young children, seniors and every age group in between.

Thanks to Angie Greenlee, beginners have the opportunity to join a successful Stanly County support group. When Greenlee began running, she knew 2 other runners and both were marathoners. She realized how beginners needed help and encouragement. This prompted her to start Running 101. Courses start in March and run for 8 to 10 weeks. Meeting once a week, the group starts by running or walking 2 miles around Albemarle. They are encouraged to repeat the exercise 2 to 3 times a week. Mentors from the Uwharrie Running Club act as personal cheerleaders. Motivational speakers urge them on. The end goal of the program is to run the 5K (3.1 miles) Beach Blast event in May.

“We have a good success rate,” says Greenlee. “75% of the group continue to run and then come back and serve as mentors to new runners. Jessica Ingram, one of our motivational speakers, began with Running 101 two and a half years ago and is now running marathons.”

“Setting yearly goals, running in races and running with friends gives runners their motivation,” says Asciutto. “The more quality and variety races we have the more fun we have and the more people we attract to Stanly County, so lace up those running shoes and hit the pavement. Your mind and your body will be glad you did.”

It’s time to get out and about this winter weekend in Stanly County. There’s a swimming team to cheer on, a workshop where you can learn to draw cartoons like Dennis the Menace and a Winter Revue by the Fancy Feet Dance Studio.

On Saturday, the Falling Rivers Gallery presents a Dennis the Menace Cartoon Workshop from 10 am until noon. Illustrator Marcus Hamilton will share his cartoon illustration technique with participants. Come and learn how to draw like a pro.

On Sunday, the Fancy Feet Dance Studio presents its Winter Revue at the Agri-Civic Center. Stop by and watch these aspiring young dancers show off the techniques they have learned throughout the year.

At 2 pm on Saturday, Pfeiffer Swimming team takes on Mars Hill at Pfeiffer University.

While you’re on the Pfeiffer campus supporting the swimming team, take some time to explore the Misenheimer community. Big changes are in store for this quiet corner of the county. The widening of NC Highway 49 and US Highway 52 will bring more traffic and more commercial development to the area. Misenheimer is gearing up for these changes and is determined to shape them to suit the interests of the village and its inhabitants. The vision is for an educational, residential and agricultural community.

The jewel in Misenheimer’s crown is Pfeiffer University. With its pleasing architecture and tree-shaded campus, this facility attracts a diversified student body from both inside and outside North Carolina as well as from overseas. Throughout the academic year cultural and sporting events take place on a regular basis. Check out the beautiful chapel, the art gallery, the small theater and the newly renovated student center. Keep an eye on the University calendar and you’ll find there are many events in these venues where the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

While Misenheimer was only incorporated in 2003, it has a long history of tourism and education. In the late 1800’s a stop on the railroad called Gladstone brought visitors to an early tourist destination called Misenheimer Springs. The village boasted a gold mine and an academy. The gold mine is long gone, but the academy became the Mitchell Home School that eventually evolved into Pfeiffer University. Since that time, education has been the major industry of the area.

And so perhaps Misenheimer’s early days of tourism and education foreshadowed its future. Easier access to the region is sure to attract more tourists and the village is already part of the Uwharrie Lakes Region. It is in close proximity to the lakes themselves, the Uwharrie National Forest, Morrow Mountain State Park and within easy driving distance of the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. With Pfeiffer University and the new Gray Stone Charter High School located in Misenheimer, the community is close to its goal of becoming an Educational Village.

Misenheimer’s future is shared with its closely located sister city of Richfield, and together they foresee a bright future for this northern corner of Stanly County.

Every community, no matter how small, has a history to share. These histories give us a peek into our past and serve to show us where we came from and how we got to where we are today. To their credit, many of Stanly County’s towns have kept good historical records that include artifacts, photos and other memorabilia. This winter weekend might be a good time to visit our county’s museums and browse through these exhibits.

The little town of Badin on the southern shores of Badin Lake is a good place to begin. It boasts one of the finest museum complexes in the area. The main museum is housed in the old Badin kindergarten building and has a story-line display that begins with spearheads from the Hardaway site, one of the most prestigious archeological sites in the southeastern United States. The story-line continues through the building of the Whitney Dam, the arrival of the French to build the Narrows Dam, an aluminum smelter and the village of Badin itself. The display finishes with a look at Badin as an Alcoa company town. Across from the main museum is the Firehouse Museum. This houses the old Badin fire truck and other fire fighting memorabilia, and also has a wall display of rare photographs showing the building of the Narrows Dam. The third building in the complex is a restored Badin townhouse furnished as it would have been in 1915.

Follow the scenic byway out of Badin to Morrow Mountain State Park and stop in at the newly upgraded museum. Video and interactive exhibits show how the Uwharrie Mountains were formed and how they became the gently rounded hills we know today. There are exhibits showing how Native American Indians used the rock for their spearheads and other videos and exhibits that show the variety and abundance of the park’s wildlife.

From Morrow Mountain, continue along the scenic byway to Norwood. This community that bills itself as the gateway to Lake Tillery, took over the old Police Department, raised money to renovate it and turned it into the town museum. The library, situated next door, provides access for the visitor. Displays include a veterans memorial wall, DVD’s on the history of the town and southern Stanly County, and photos and memorabilia from the old Norwood High School and its sports teams.

From Norwood, head west to Oakboro. Here you’ll find the Oakboro Regional Museum of History. Exhibits include displays and early American artifacts from the ancient life of the Rocky River. An early 1900 Stanly County map, hand drawn and lettered, lists farm landowners. There are photo archives and artifacts celebrating the people, organizations and times of the area. Just down the road you’ll find the Oakboro Railroad Museum with permanent exhibits of Oakboro’s original Western Union telegraph key, jacks used for track maintenance and other memorabilia from early days. A restored Norfolk Southern caboose is permanently situated on tracks on the museum site. The museum also features sidewalks with engraved pavers, an information kiosk and information on early workers in and around Oakboro.

Check for museum hours on museum websites, local town halls or with the Convention and Visitors Bureau, then head out into the countryside along Stanly County’s beautiful scenic byways and take a peek into our past.

One of the many good things our area has going for it is the comparatively mild winter weather. Check that out with our friends who migrated south from places like upper New York State. This means that the facilities we enjoy so much in the summer are enjoyable pretty much throughout the year.

Morrow Mountain is our jewel in the crown and the many hiking and horse trails are at their best in these cool months. The view from the top is stunning. Ride to the boat landing for a close up view of the Pee Dee River and stop off at the Dr. Francis Kron Homestead on the way back. Kron was one of the first medical doctors to settle in the Piedmont and his office, infirmary and greenhouse appear much as they did in the 1870’s.

Ride down to Norwood and visit the Fork Farm and Stables. Jim Cogdell purchased the land in 1999 and named it after its position at the confluence of the Pee Dee and Rocky Rivers. The farm is committed to land and wildlife conservation and operates as a working farm. The gate is always open and visitors are welcome. Check out the store at “The Ordinary” gun lodge and take a look at the incredible barn. The Fork offers activities and adventures throughout the year to suit a wide range of interests, but is best known for its world-class equestrian events.

No matter where you go in Stanly County, no matter how small the community, it is sure to have a park where you can relax, sit a spell or enjoy some outdoor activity. There are few counties of comparable size and population that boast more parks. There are 23 in all that provide everything from soccer fields and bocce courts to fishing ponds and disc golf courses, and, of course plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy some of our balmy winter weather.

The area also has 4 wineries. Stony Mountain Vineyards, Rocky River Vineyards, Uwharrie Vineyards and Dennis Vineyards are all well worth a visit to stroll around the grounds, admire the views, check out the shops and perhaps plan those up-coming family or business events. And try the wine-tastings offered by all 4 of these fine facilities. You’ll be amazed at the quality and variety of this locally grown product.

And, of course, there is golf. Home to golf legend Johnny Palmer, the area boasts varied courses from the historic, newly renovated par 71 course in Badin, to the newer par 72 courses at Uwharrie Point, Piney Point, Red Bridge and Tillery Tradition. Call ahead for tee-times or to find out about special events and tournament schedules.

Take advantage of these short winter days, enjoy that nip in the air and get out into the many facilities our county offers to enjoy fresh air and sunshine. Come summer, when those pesky mosquitoes get you and the humidity covers you like a damp blanket, you’ll be glad you did.

Happy New Year! We’re off to a quiet start—still recovering from all the Christmas festivities, perhaps—but the coming year will see lots of activity in our corner of the world. Sometime this weekend would be a good time to take a ride to the top of Morrow Mountain for a little quiet reflection. Sit on the stone wall and look at the landscape of small farms cut out of what was once a great forest. The modest houses, lush green fields, well fed horses and cows grazing in the pastures give a sense of serenity and are a tribute to the hard-working folks that make up our county. Off to the north, the Uwharrie National Forest spreads for miles, a tribute to those who have worked to save our country’s natural beauty. And on a clear day, look south west along the skyline and you will see, fifty miles away, the two towers of Charlotte’s commercial center, the Duke Energy building and the Bank of America building, a tribute to the industry of these great corporations.

Farming, preserving nature and commerce are all achieved in great harmony at the truly beautiful Fork Farm and Stables at Norwood. On Thursday and Friday, the Farm will hold a two day clinic with a unique format wherein three long standing friends and nationally ranked equestrians come together to share their knowledge, stories, energy and laughter. The friends have spent the last two seasons watching each other deliver top finishes at the World Equestrian Games, Rolex, Burghley and the Pan American Games. Come down and meet these young women at Stanly County’s outstanding equestrian facility.

The Stanly County Chamber of Commerce organizes a Leadership Stanly Class each year. On Saturday, the class of 2010 challenges business and running buddies to gather up their competitive spirit for a 5K relay race. Teams of 3 will each run a 5 K to find out who has the fastest running group or business group. Race Day registration is available. The course is a 3.1 mile run through downtown Albemarle. If you don’t run, come on out and line the course to cheer on those intrepid athletes.

The Stanly County Senior Center presents its annual New Year’s Eve Dance at the Senior Center from 8:15 pm to 12:15 am. The Hi-Liter band will perform. Tickets are just $7 per person. Bring a finger food to load up the goody table, put on those dancing shoes and get ready for a fun evening as you bring in 2012.

Whether you choose to run a race, ride a horse or dance the night away, have a very happy New Year here in Stanly County.

There’s no need to tell you that the big event of this weekend is CHRISTMAS DAY. For many of us the few days leading up to it are filled with last minute shopping, decorating and cooking. If there are still holes in your gift list, this is a good time to explore the many locally owned shops in Albemarle and the small communities throughout our county. It’s here you’ll find the one-of-a-kind items that will be big hits under the tree.

There are too many shops to list them all, but let me mention a few to get you started.

Downtown Albemarle has a warm and welcoming coffee shop, Glory Beans, where you can fuel up before you start and buy a gift card for the coffee enthusiast on your list. Drop in to the Falling Rivers Gallery across the street and check out the on-going Saggy Frog Holiday Craft Show. Next door, Starnes window display is sure to get you in the holiday spirit and inside there are even more enticing gift items. Just down the road, Health Nutz offers many unusual ideas for presents, especially for those health nuts on your list. And for a personalized present try Ad Works on the Square.

Reflections on Main is a cottage on East Main that had the unique idea of creating tiny shops within the shop with each room a different theme.

Need a Christmas cake? The Bloomin’ Cakes Bakery in Locust’s town center is the place to go. Stop for a cup of coffee and a slice of something delicious while you’re there. After all, it’s the season for a little indulgence. And stop in at the Tiger Lily while you’re in the neighborhood.

Norwood has a beautiful florist shop, Edwards Flowers and Gifts, that offers wonderful Christmas displays and decorated trees. In Richfield, don’t miss the All Around Consignments and More where you’ll find gently used items at truly great prices. Badin boasts a new shop in its downtown bloc called The Cottage House where gently used furniture and accessories are tastefully arranged in the rooms of a hundred year old building.

There are many more delightful shops around the county, often tucked in to a century old building, or in the quiet downtown area of a village, or even out in the country at a rural crossroads. Search them out. They are the backbone of our retail trade, offering items seldom found elsewhere, and what better Christmas present to give the community than to shop locally.

Santa has ridden in Christmas parades throughout the county, tossed candy, made promises and retreated to the North Pole to prepare for the big day. Lights adorn trees and houses and fences in every neighborhood. Shops are filled with tempting items. Children are exceptionally well-behaved. It’s the quiet before the storm, or should we say before the big holiday. But even though there may not be too many planned activities in Stanly County this weekend, there’s plenty going on.

Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street in Albemarle continues its Saggy Frog Holiday Craft Show until Christmas Eve. This venerable old building, once home to Belk department store and Davis Drug Store, lends itself well to the holiday atmosphere. Local artists run the place, decorate it with a sure hand and fill it with their one-of-a-kind creations. The entire back of the old store is dedicated to the craft show. Take your time to browse this locally owned and locally run venue. And be sure to ask about the ghosts.

On Friday, Pfeiffer Men’s Basketball team takes on Barber Scotia at Pfeiffer at 7 pm. Run up to Misenheimer and support the local team.

Just down the road, in the historic village of Badin, the Badin Inn continues its popular Friday night Pickin’ on the Porch from 7 pm to 10 pm. Settle down on the winterized porch to listen to the live music of Taylor and the CRS band. The Inn was built in 1913 to house Alcoa engineers and, later, Badin schoolteachers. Now refurbished as a country inn, it is a truly romantic spot for weddings, parties and wining and dining with its beautifully decorated suites, and its full service pub and restaurant. Ask for a tour of the facilities of this Stanly County gem.

For those of us running out of time, Saturday may well be the day to set up the tree, decorate and shop. The stores are filled with bustling crowds, seasonal music and gift items, and the air of excitement on children’s faces is just the thing to get you in the holiday spirit, no matter how far behind you are.

On Sunday, take a break from Christmas and go up to Pfeiffer to watch the Pfeiffer Men’s Basketball team take on Apprentice School at 2 pm. Support those Falcons!

Later in the day, take some time to ride around the county’s small towns. We may not rival McAdenville, but some of the Christmas décor will blow you away. Lights flash and twinkle, reindeer pull sleds over rooftops, Christmas trees glow, and if you’re lucky, you may spot Santa Claus himself.

We’re counting down the days to Christmas and Stanly County is bustling with holiday activities. From winter wine festivals at the local vineyards to a tour of homes decorated for the season, and from a special Christmas play to Santa himself visiting the local newspaper, there’s every reason to enjoy this special time of the year right here in Stanly County.

On Thursday, if you haven’t already checked out the unique gifts at the Falling Rivers Gallery Saggy Frog Craft Show, now is the time. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Gallery and its artistic Christmas décor will put you in the right mood to start your weekend.

And to continue that mood, for 3 days, beginning on Friday, Dennis Vineyards hosts its Winter Wine Weekend. Sample their seasonal Christmas wines or munch on cookies served with hot mulled Dennis Vineyards wine or non-alcoholic punch, and all to the sound of seasonal music. And check out the gift shop where you’ll find many unusual items for those special people on your holiday shopping list.

Spread the news. This item hot off the press! Santa Claus is coming to the Stanly News and Press this Friday from 1 pm to 6 pm. Bring the kids, drop off your letters to Santa and have a chat with the big man himself. Feel free to bring your camera to get a shot of your little one with Mr. Claus.

On Friday evening, the Uwharrie Players continue their presentation of Robert Inman’s play, A High Country Christmas. The play, about a miserly curmudgeon reminiscent of Charles Dickens’ Scrooge, is performed at the new Central School Auditorium on Third Street in Albemarle on December 9 and 10 at 7:30 pm and on Sunday, December11 at 2:30 pm.

Now it’s time to head over to Badin for some live music from 7 pm to 10 pm as the Badin Inn continues its popular Friday night Pickin’ on the Porch series. This Friday, Eversole and Flame are the featured artists on the cozy winterized porch of the historic Inn.

On Saturday, Rocky River Vineyards holds its Christmas Open House from 1 pm to 6 pm. A select few artists will be selling gift items, children can visit with Santa Claus with cookies and juice, and throughout the day you can listen and participate in Karaoke Christmas Carols and other Christmas songs. It’s a great day to visit the vineyard with friends and family. And don’t forget to bring your camera.

On Sunday, Albemarle Downtown Development presents its Holiday Tour of Homes from 2 pm to 7 pm. Proceeds benefit the Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation Design Committee. Wrap up your weekend with the Singing Americans as they present “Christmas…Then, Now and Forever” on Sunday at 3 pm at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. If the wonderful music of this great singing choir doesn’t get you in the Christmas Spirit, nothing will.

“Christmas is a’coming, The goose is getting fat…” begins an old English rhyme that we’ll finish at the end of this article. We don’t know about fat geese, but judging by the activity in Stanly County this weekend, Christmas is very definitely on its way. From a Christmas candle- light tour in the daytime to a Christmas tour of homes, and from a Santa Social to Christmas parades, there are plenty of fun events to get you in the Christmas spirit. And there’s also shopping, music and a Christmas play.

Let’s begin our weekend with a visit to the Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street in downtown Albemarle. The Saggy Frog Holiday Craft Show continues here through December 24, 2011. This is the place to find one-of-a-kind locally made crafts for that unique Christmas gift. The Gallery is also filled with paintings, sculpture, pottery and jewelry, all by local artists and all for sale at reasonable prices.

On Thursday night, ride out to Oakboro for their annual Christmas Parade. This event draws families from throughout the surrounding area for the special rides, entertainment and, of course, Santa Claus.

On Friday, it’s the weekly Pickin’ on the Porch night at the Badin Inn. Every week the Inn presents live music on its porch, winterized for your comfort, from 7 pm to 10 pm. This Friday enjoy the music of Brad Harwood while you wine and dine in this beautiful venue.

Back in Albemarle, the Uwharrie Players present Robert Inman’s A High Country Christmas. The play, about the transformation of a miserly curmudgeon reminiscent of Charles Dickens’ Scrooge, takes place during the Depression in a rural mountain community. The play is performed in the new Central School Auditorium on Third Street on December 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 7:30 pm and on Sundays, December 4 and 11 at 2:30 pm.

On Saturday, ride out to Reed Gold Mine for the only Christmas candle-light tour you can take in the daytime. From 10 am until 4 pm the underground mine tunnels will be decorated for the holidays, and special holiday-themed tours will tell how Christmas was celebrated over the years at Reed Gold Mine by John Reed and other miners and their families. The Stamp Mill, circa 1895, will also be open for tours. The celebration continues in the Visitors Center with crafts, historical demonstrations, musical performances and free refreshments.

From 10 am until 8 pm the American Legion Post 76 presents a Santa Social and Craft Fair at the Walter B. Hill American Legion Grounds on Highway 52 Business South. Warm up the fellowship of the season with homemade desserts and hot coffee, cocoa and tea. Santa will be there for pictures. The cost is $2 plus a canned food item to feed veterans for the holidays.

Ready for a little more fun this Saturday? The Badin Inn presents a Goofball Golf Tournament on the Badin golf course starting at 2 pm. Open to members and non-members, this is not your standard golf tournament. Remember why golf is FUN? Badin Inn promises you will after this. It is designed to allow entrants to have fun whether they are scratch golfers or brand new to the game. No one has the advantage on this front 9 level playing field. Entry fee includes dinner, two drinks and a cart fee.

On Sunday, from 2 pm to 4 pm check out the People’s Parade in Palestine. It will begin at the railroad tracks on Airport Road and finish on Mountain View Church Road. Don’t miss this truly local fun parade.

In Norwood, the Community Service League presents the Sunday afternoon Norwood Tour of Homes from 2 pm to 5 pm. It begins at Edwards Flowers and Gifts shop and includes the homes of Kenny and May Horne, Barry and Cathy Page, Meredith S. Hatley, the Fork Farm Bed and Breakfast and the Edgewater Clubhouse. Refreshments will be served at the Edgewater Clubhouse.

Stanly County has much to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving weekend. We like to think of ourselves as an oasis of calm in the midst of North Carolina’s busy urban centers. Untouched by sprawl, we are a land of rural beauty with scenic byways, lakes and streams and ancient mountain tops worn into softly contoured hills. The cool weather of autumn draws many visitors to enjoy hiking and boating at Morrow Mountain State Park, and this is the time of year when our small communities host holiday parades and craft shows and cruise-ins.

When the turkey is a memory and the pumpkin pie is no more, begin your weekend on Friday with a visit to the Falling Rivers Gallery on West Main Street in downtown Albemarle. This unique venue run by members of the Stanly Arts Guild displays the work of local artists and features paintings, pottery, jewelry and more. From now until December 24, 2011 the Gallery features the Saggy Frog Holiday Craft Show. With a wide variety of local one-of-a-kind hand-made crafts by local artisans to choose from, this is the place to find those special Christmas gifts.

Later on Friday, stow those newly-purchased gift items away and head out to Oakboro for the monthly Cruise-In. This event continues throughout the winter on every fourth Friday of the month. Although the crowds are thinner, giving the visitor more opportunity to see the lovingly restored old cars and trucks, and the Burn-Out will not begin again until next April, the event is still a popular place for photo opportunities and friendly conversation with the car owners.

On the other end of the county, from 7 pm to 10 pm, the Badin Inn continues its popular Friday night Pickin’ on the Porch. The porch itself is now winterized, a warm and cozy place to hear local groups entertain. This Friday, don’t miss the music of Loose Change as you wine and dine in this beautiful setting.

On Saturday, Locust comes alive with the spirit of Christmas. This is a great place to begin your holiday festivities. The Christmas Festival opens at 12:30 pm followed by a concert at Locust City Hall featuring Wayne and Gina Stewart. The Christmas Parade, sponsored by the West Stanly Lions Club, begins at 3 pm. At 3:30 pm to 7 pm there is a Community Blood Drive in the Community Room at the Town Center. At 4:30 pm Locust will hold the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Locust Government Center with Congressman Larry Kissell. 5 pm brings another concert by Wayne and Gina Stewart and from 5 pm to 5:30 pm visitors have the opportunity to tour the Locust City Hall. And for the grand finale, be sure to catch the 6 pm tree lighting.

Sunday afternoon between 12 pm and 5 pm is a great time to visit Uwharrie Vineyards. This 14,000 square foot facility located on Austin Road in western Stanly County, features a spacious visitors center, a formal banquet hall, large tasting bar and unique gift shop. Surrounded by 50 acres of beautiful grape vines, it’s the place to go to sample some of the award winning wines, tour the operations, bring a picnic lunch, relax in the rocking chairs, camp on the grounds or just enjoy the afternoon. Uwharrie Vineyards feels that life, like great wine, should be enjoyed to the fullest. Amen to that and Happy Thanksgiving.

The languorous days of summer are behind us, crisp autumn weather is upon us and Stanly County is cranking up the pace. An economic summit meeting hopefully predicts good news, a craft show offers a chance to begin our Christmas shopping, a chorale lifts our spirits and a pre-holiday party at a local vineyard puts us in the holiday mood.

On Thursday, let’s begin with a visit to the Falling Rivers Gallery in downtown Albemarle. The Saggy Frog Holiday Craft Show runs through December 24, 2011, giving you plenty of time to browse and shop right up until the last minute. The show features crafts by local artists. This is where you’ll find one-of-a-kind gifts unavailable anywhere else.

On Friday, the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Economic Summit at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. Speakers include the North Carolina Secretary of Commerce and Stanly County native, Keith Crisco.

The place to be on Friday evening is downtown Albemarle for their annual Downtown Christmas. From 6 pm to 9 pm the town comes alive as families stroll the closed-to-traffic streets to enjoy music and entertainment. There’ll be children’s crafts, a food court, Winter Wonderland, face painting, Santa and Mrs. Claus and the tree lighting ceremony. All the shops are open and feature special entertainment. This is a wonderful way to begin the holiday season.

On Saturday, to keep that spirit going, drive out to Uwharrie Vineyards on Austin Road for their Pre-Holiday Season Party from 10 am to 6 pm. The day-long celebration features a private book signing, Lantern Hill Pottery, guitar artist Jeff Brown and fresh Sangria wine. During the event the vineyard showcases holiday specials on wines, gifts, pottery and more.

Later on Saturday evening the Stanly County Chorale presents “A Day for Dancing”. The event takes place at the First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle on Saturday and Sunday at 7 pm. The concert features the complete title work by Lloyd Pfautsch with orchestra and dancer, and a section of other choral works. Admission is free and non-perishable foods will be collected for Stanly Community Christian Ministries.

If you’re thinking about Christmas shopping already, think about a gift of a locally produced bottle of wine and give yourself the gift of a visit to the vineyards to choose it. Stanly County is proud of its viniculture, a relatively new form of farming for our county. There are four vineyards in our area, Stony Mountain Vineyards, Rocky River Vineyards, Uwharrie Vineyards and Dennis Vineyards. All are open to the public and each well worth a visit.

Dennis Vineyards, on Endy Road, began operations in 1996 and has grown by leaps and bounds ever since. It’s specialty of Muscadine and fruit wines has proven highly popular here and in the surrounding areas. From a beginning as a 2500 bottle winery, the vineyard currently produces 275,000 bottles a year. Wine tastings, tours and a large venue for parties and weddings completes the picture of this unique Stanly County facility. Stay tuned for information on the vineyards Winter Wine Weekend.

Uwharrie Phase One Grand Opening Set for November 12

Mountain bikers have over 15 miles to celebrate in Uwharrie’s Wood Run Area, including six miles of new singletrack! The Tarheel TrailBlazers chapter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association- Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (IMBA- SORBA) is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of over six miles new, purpose-built singletrack mountain bike trails at the Wood Run Area Trails in the Uwharrie National Forest located in Montgomery County, North Carolina. The event begins at noon on November 12 at the Wood Run Area trailhead. Festivities include a ribbon cutting, trail rides, games and food. The Wood Run Area trailhead is located on

NC 24/27 between Albemarle and Troy, two miles east of the bridges over Lake Tillery/Pee Dee River.

Tom Sauret, Executive Director of IMBA-SORBA explains “Several years ago, the International Mountain Biking Association identified the Uwharrie National Forest as having great potential to be a Ride Center that offers a vast array of mountain bike trails. These trails are meant to be not just a local, but also a regional destination for mountain bikers. Phase 1 is just the beginning, but it's an important milestone in the enhancement of mountain biking in the Uwharrie National Forest and the surrounding area. Already the parking lot is filling up regularly, and we’re hearing great things from the riders who’ve tried the new trail."

Phase 1 at Wood Run, begun in 2009, was an extensive project that touched the existing Wood Run Road, Supertree, and Keyauwee trails. Phase 1 included design, construction and rehabilitation. IMBA Trail Solutions (ITS) initially analyzed the area, designed and flagged the trail, and sought a contractor to make their design a reality. ITS also designed Albemarle’s City Lake Park Trail, which was built by SORBA Pro Trails. This one-mile Gateway Trail was built to give area residents a taste of the work to come at Uwharrie.

Brian Bristol, a local advocate who’s worked on this project since the beginning, says, “The new trail and upgrades make for excellent mountain bicycle riding, and the rehabbing will make the existing trail much more sustainable. Although designed and built to be attractive to mountain bikers, these trails are open to other recreational users, such as hikers and trail runners. It’s a great resource that enhances our community. We invite bikers and outdoor enthusiasts to come experience what we’ve accomplished”.

The community is solidly behind this project, and has worked to see their dream come true. The majority of funding for Phase 1 came from a Recreational Trails Program grant and a matching donation from First Bank of Troy. Additional contributions were made by Uwharrie Capital, Montgomery County Tourism Development Authority, The Albemarle Rotary Club, Tarheel Trailblazers and individual donors. Volunteers have added time and labor to augment the monetary donations.

Trail Dynamics, based in Cedar Mountain, NC, was contracted by IMBA-SORBA to carry out the construction. Trail Dynamics is an experienced multi-use trail construction outfit that has analyzed, designed, and built trails throughout the country on public and private lands. A shining example of their work in North Carolina is enjoyed by thousands of mountain cyclists at DuPont State Forest. Their work at Uwharrie increases the length of available mountain biking trails at the Wood Run trail system to over 15 miles.

The history of the Uwharrie Ride Center Project stems from over a decade worth of conceptual ideas on how to best use the region's natural resources for quality recreation and economic growth. Central Park NC, as the region is known, initially adopted the idea of a Uwharrie Cycling Center over a decade ago, and that concept eventually attracted IMBA and their regional division SORBA. The region of Uwharrie met the qualities IMBA recognized as an ideal destination for their new Ride Center Initiative. Thus a project was formed and given traction through industry funding, state and federal grants and local support.

Hikers, bikers, golfers and walkers throughout Stanly County are enjoying these crisp autumn days. And the county’s wineries, antique shops and galleries provide plenty of places indoors if the weather turns chilly. The local college athletic teams are in high gear and looking for supporting fans. And this weekend is when we turn out to show our support for those who have served in the military.

On Thursday and Friday, the Stanly Community College Men’s Baseball team takes on the Iron Man Challenge. The game starts at 1pm on both days and will be played at the Don Montgomery Park. Come on out and support the Eagles.

On Friday there’s a full day of fun events to be had at the Fork Farm and Stables in Norwood. The Red Shoe Shootout Sporting Clays Tournament benefits the new Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte on Morehead Street which will serve families of young patients at the Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital and the Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center. Come on out for a great day in a beautiful setting and support a worthy cause.

The Stanly County Veterans Day Parade starts at 11 am on Saturday in downtown Albemarle. Go a little early and take the kids to have their faces painted at the Courthouse Square Park by Vicki Galloway. Then line the parade route to cheer on the marchers and show your support for those who have served.

At 1 pm head off to the Pfeiffer University campus and cheer on the Pfeiffer Swimming team as they take on Lenoir-Rhyne/Converse.

From 2 pm to 5 pm the Four-Legged Freedom 5K takes place at Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle. This is a great fundraiser for the Stanly County Humane Society. Bring your dog or dogs and your friends to show support for our four-legged friends.

This fall weekend, with plenty of color still left in the woods, it’s a good time to visit Rocky River Vineyards. Situated just off Highway 24/27 on the Charlotte side of Locust, the vineyard sits on the banks of Big Meadow Creek where it flows into the Rocky River. The first grapes were planted in 2003. Today the vineyard boasts wine tastings, a gift shop and a variety of wines to choose from. Wildlife abounds around the grape vines with geese, wild turkeys and deer grazing in the pastures. Ride out and enjoy this unique venue where you can soak in the peace and quiet of the countryside, and enjoy a glass of wine within the sound of a gurgling creek.

Stanfield Fall Festival : Saturday, October 29th... The town of Stanfield will have trunk-or-treating going on, along with Hay rides, kids games, contest, music and much more! Everything starts at 6:00pm!

New London Fall Festival : Saturday, October 29th... The New London town Park will be filled with music and people enjoying the day at their inaugural Fall Festival! They will have plenty of food, entertainment and music for everyone! Everything will get started around 11:30am.

City Lake Park Fall Festival : Monday, October 31st... City Lake Park in Albemarle will be full of Ghost and Gobblins trunk-or-treating and enjoying the annual Fall Festival! In addition to trunk-or-treating there will be games, balloons, music and even a costume contest! It all starts at 5:30pm.

Fall Festivals are popping up all around our county. We have corn mazes and hay mazes, hot chocolate and apple cider, costume contests and spooky hayrides, and of course trick or treat around the neighborhoods. For background effect we have trees showing off their fall colors, cool mornings, warm afternoons and Carolina blue skies.

On Thursday, come and show off your costume at the Albemarle Downtown 5^th Annual Fall Festival and Costume Parade. No tricks, just treats at this event that begins at 4 pm.

While you’re in the neighborhood, drop in to the Falling Rivers Gallery. The Stanly Arts Guild Member Show highlights work by local artists in painting, pottery, sculpture and jewelry. All items are for sale. Don’t miss the last few days of this delightful show. It may be just the place to begin your Christmas shopping.

There’s a lot to choose from on this fall Friday.

Out on Highway 73, the Get Lost Corn Maze of Terror, a guided walk through a haunted maze, continues through the end of this month.

Oakboro Cruise-In and Burn-out continues to bring in people from all around the area to see the shiny cars and watch the tires burn at this unique, only in Stanly County, event. The Cruise-In starts at 5 pm and the Burn-out starts at 9 pm.

Head over to Wall Street in Albemarle for the E. E. Waddell Center Halloween party. Festivities get under way at 6 pm and go on until 8 pm. There’ll be entertainment, candy and games for the kids.

Ride out to Badin for the Friday night Pickin’on the Porch. On this night this popular weekly event offers the live music of The Invaders Band from 7 pm to 10 pm. Free and open to the public, food and drink is available in this beautiful setting overlooking the Badin golf course.

If time permits between all this activity, run out to Pfeiffer University to support the Pfeiffer Swimming team as they take on Brenau/Queens at 6 pm.

Saturday begins with a visit to the Stanly County Farmers’ Market at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. On this last day of their season they are hosting the annual Market Station Craft Fair with local crafters offering one-of-a-kind items that may be just right for that Christmas gift list.

Turn on the radio to our local stations today and tomorrow and listen to the Uwharrie Players production of Orson Welles historic Halloween broadcast from October 30, 1938. The original broadcast prompted mass hysteria, so hold on to your hat.

For a calmer treat, try Gods Country Fall Paddle Tour, an easy paddle taking in the fall colors and stopping for a picnic lunch along the way.

Stanfield Fall Festival gets underway this afternoon with a giant hay maze, hayrides to the Pumpkin Patch, games and prizes, a costume contest and lots more. And everything is FREE.

More freebies as New London serves free hotdogs from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at their New London Fall Festival. The Kollections perform from 1 pm to 3 pm. The festival takes place in the New London Town Park.

There is plenty of sports activity to support this afternoon as Pfeiffer Men’s Soccer team takes on Queens at 3 pm, the Pfeiffer Women’s Soccer team takes on Queens at 1 pm at Pfeiffer University, and the Stanly Community College Men’s Baseball team takes on New River CC at 12 pm at Don Montgomery Park.

Monday brings two more events for those trick or treaters. A Halloween Festival for children 10 and under starts at 5:30 pm at City Lake Park. There’ll be games, balloons, music, a fun castle and costume contests for different age groups. There’ll also be lots of goody bags, candy and prizes at his free fun-filled event.

The Badin Inn is hosting its own Fall Festival from 5 pm to 9 pm with Trick or Treating for the kids, games, spooky hayrides and more. The event is free and open to the public.

There’s a nip in the morning air and welcome warmth in the afternoons. For the intrepid fun seeker in Stanly County all this signals that grapes are ready for stomping, pumpkins ready to be transformed into Jack-o-lanterns and Galloping Ghosts ready to run through the streets.

Thursday is a good time to begin your weekend with a visit to Falling Rivers Gallery on Main Street in downtown Albemarle. The current Stanly Arts Guild Member Show gives a good overview of local artistic talent. On display and for sale until the show ends on October 28, 2011 are outstanding photographs, paintings, pottery, jewelry, gourds and sculpture, all by local artists.

Free and open to the public is an event that will appeal to the many caregivers among us. The 9^th annual caregiver CareFest takes place at the Stanly County Senior Center, North Third Street, Albemarle on Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. Vendors from local agencies will be available to explain services. There is a choice of two workshops on care giving issues. Keynote speaker Lisa P. Gwyther, MSW Director of Duke Family Support Program will speak on “Caregiver Alternatives to Running on Empty (CARE)”.

Friday at the Fork Farm and Stables will see the 2^nd annual Thurston Arthritis Research Center “Taking Aim at Arthritis” Competition Sporting Clay Shoot. This is a Lewis style competition with three categories to be assigned on site. Awards will be given to the top three teams in each category. Proceeds benefit UNC Thurston Arthritis Research Center to directly support its mission to investigate causes, consequences and treatments of arthritis and autoimmune diseases.

It’s the third Friday of the month and time for the Locust Cruise-in. Starting at 5 pm and ending at 9 pm, the event takes place in the Locust Center City with vendors from local restaurants ready to serve you.

As the evening shadows draw in, take your courage in hand and wander through the Maze of Terror at the Get Lost Corn Maze on Highway 73. This guided walk on a haunted trail is just the thing to get you in the mood for the ghosts and ghouls of Halloween.

For a calmer evening, try Pickin’ on the Porch at the Badin Inn. You’ll find good music and good food and drink in the beautiful atmosphere of this wide porch overlooking the rolling fairways of the Badin golf course. This Friday, the live music of “Loose Change” entertains from 7 pm to 10 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Saturday begins bright and early with a trip to the Stanly County Farmers’ Market. They’re nearing the end of their season now so hurry down to purchase some of that good local produce, homemade goodies and local crafts.

Galloping Ghosts will be about early on this fall morning. This 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:30 am and finishes at 12:30 pm. The run starts at Locust Park Tennis Courts and ends at Stanly Medical Services. The event is followed by a Family Fun Day and there’ll be free flu shots for the first 100 guests. There’ll also be healthcare screenings and emergency medical vehicle viewing that includes the helicopter from Carolinas Healthcare System.

Back in Albemarle there’s more fun to be had at the Smith Splash! Free Concert in the Park from 11:45 am to 5 pm at the YMCA Park (rain day location is Market Station). Performers include Uwharrie Sound, The Talent Company, Pine Grove UMC Movement Group, Jacobs Creek, Trey Calloway and the Stoney Creek Boys, Joy Almond, Absolute Zero, Audioholics, Shawn Dykes and Spirit of Praise, Smith Family, and Clay Pigeons. Bring the kids, bring a chair, bring your appetite and get ready for a great time with proceeds going to support the Smith William Snuggs Endowment Fund.

Down the road at Don Montgomery Park, the Stanly Community College Men’s Baseball Team takes on Florence-Darlington at 1 pm. Come and support those Eagles.

The fish are biting and Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series will be ready to go after them on Tuckertown starting at the Flat Creek Boat Landing.

Greet the Harvest at Rocky River Vineyards with a Grape Stomping Dinner. This Saturday evening festivity begins at 6 pm and ends at 10 pm and includes hors d’oeuvres, buffet dinner catered by 200 North Family Restaurant, grape stomping and musical entertainment provided by the Salisbury Swing Band.

Sunday might be time for a little winding down after all this weekend’s activities and Stanly County is the place to do it. Take a gentle hike on Morrow Mountain or a lazy cruise on Badin Lake. Ride along our scenic byways and enjoy the changing colors of autumn. Whittle away at that pumpkin as you get ready to gear up for next weekend with its ghosts and ghouls and goblins.

Here in Stanly County the pumpkins are fat, leaves glow with color and lakes gleam like blue silk. October is a grand month in our neck of the woods and there are plenty of ways to enjoy it. From the challenge of sporting clays to a quiet walk through an art gallery and from the nostalgia of Gershwin’s music to a Fright Night in a haunted wood there’s a variety of activity and entertainment to be found throughout the county.

Start on Thursday in downtown Albemarle where the Falling Rivers Gallery (next door to Starnes Jewelers) presents the Stanly Arts Guild Member Show. Drop in to see the work of local artists and stay to browse in the Gallery. This charming venue is open 5 days a week and offers for sale a wide variety of wall art, jewelry, pottery and more.

On Friday take a ride down to Norwood to the beautiful Fork Farm and Stables to watch the CAGC Sporting Clays Championship. There will be food, drinks, tournament awards and raffle prizes at the conclusion of the event. Sporting Clay shooting is a shotgun sport suitable for the whole family. With minimal coaching, even someone who has never shot before can participate in a round of Sporting Clays while also enjoying the pristine natural surroundings of the Fork Farm. Come and watch the experts and see if this is the sport for you.

During the month of October head out to the Get Lost Corn Maze on Highway 73 and stay for the Maze of Terror, a guided walk on a haunted trail through a separate maze. Bring your courage with you.

On Friday evening the Pfeiffer Women’s Volleyball team takes on Belmont Abbey on the Pfeiffer campus at Misenheimer. Let’s hear that cheer for the home team.

On Friday night the place to be is on the porch at the Badin Inn. The live music of Taylor Chandler & the CRS Band entertains from 7 pm to 10 pm in this inviting venue overlooking the lush green fairways of the Badin golf course. This regularly scheduled Friday night event, Pickin’ on the Porch, is free and open to the public. Food and drink is available.

Saturday morning is the time to visit the Stanly County Farmers’ Market at downtown Albemarle’s Market Station. The market has been in operation for 12 years. Join the many satisfied regular customers who return again and again for good local produce, homemade goodies and local crafts.

On Saturday afternoon ride up to Misenheimer to watch the Pfeiffer Women’s Volleyball team take on Lees McRae at 2 pm on the Pfeiffer campus.

Later in the afternoon, Big Lick Festival Park hosts the ATV Drag Races from 4 pm to 10 pm. All riders are required to wear a helmet and riders under 18 must have a parents’ signature to race. There’ll be first place trophies awarded to the winners of each class. There’ll also be plenty of food and drink available, and don’t forget to bring your own chair. The park is located on Highway 205 in Oakboro.

Sunday night is a special night at the Get Lost Corn Maze on Highway 73. It’s Youth Fright Night. Local church youth groups are invited to attend this scary event.

While the youth of the county are being scared, the rest of us can attend a more calming event on this autumn Sunday evening. Ride out to the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center where the Stanly County Concert Association presents the Spectrum Brass Quintet. Imagine a performance where a brass quintet commands the stage with power and grace, a concert pianist displays dazzling virtuosity (Rhapsody in Blue) and a soprano quietly sings heartfelt Gershwin favorites. The Spectrum Brass Quintet delivers a Gershwin tribute with the first half suited for a symphony hall (think Porgy and Bess) and the second half a night on the town.

Who could ask for anything more?

They will still have the regular October hours on Saturday from 11am - 6pm and Sunday from 1pm - 6pm. But on Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30pm till 10:00pm the Corn Maze turns spooky!
If you have ever been in a corn field at night, you know that it's a scary experience by itself. Now, take that image and include a ton of terrifying monsters and sounds that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up!

If, as the saying goes, variety is the spice of life, then Stanly County is a pretty spicy place this weekend. The choice of activities ranges from moonlight paddles to tractor pulls, from a party in a park to a grape stomp, and all in the welcome cool of autumn under trees showing their first fall colors.

On Friday, Big Lick Truck and Tractor Pull gets underway at 5 pm. Sponsored by the National Tractor Pullers Association, the two day event is big in every way. The crowds are big, the concessions are big and the trucks and tractors are huge. Go early, visit the race teams and get ready for some unique entertainment. There are bleachers, but better bring a lawn chair.

On this Friday night of the full moon, God’s Country Outfitters hosts a Moonlight Paddle Tour on the Falls Reservoir at Badin. Come out and enjoy an easy, guided kayak or canoe paddle under the moon. The event includes a campfire, wine and hors d’oeuvres. Paddle out at sunset, paddle back by moonlight. It doesn’t get any more romantic than this.

Saturday already and for you early rising fishermen the Adam and Eve Bass Fishing Tournament gets underway on Badin Lake at 8 am. On Lake Tillery, Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series gets underway at the Swift Island Boat Landing.

Now it’s time to visit the Stanly County Farmers’ Market at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. As always the market features fresh produce from local vendors, homemade goodies and local crafts.

Pack those fruits and veggies away and if you hurry you can catch the Pfeiffer Swimming team as they take on Carolina Meet on the Pfeiffer campus at 11 am.

Just down the road, Richfield hosts a Party in the Park. There’ll be food, games, entertainment, exhibits, a photography contest, a car show, a tractor show, a silent auction, a live auction and the list goes on. Monk’s Band plays at 10 am, the Clay Pigeons at 11 am and the 3 generations at Noon.

On Endy Road, Dennis Vineyards holds their Harvest Festival and Grape Stomp from 11 am to 5 pm at their events facility, A Place in the Vineyard. Yes, you can actually stomp grapes just like Lucy, take a hay ride around the grounds, shop local artisans, eat food from local vendors and listen to Right Turn Clyde Band play southern rock and roll. Admission is free.

The Get Lost Corn Maze is a refreshing walk off the beaten path, but during the month of October, in a separate maze after the daytime schedule ends, you can get lost in the Maze of Terror. Scares will be stalking you in the Woods of Fear as you take a guided walk on a “haunted” trail. After you’ve navigated this life-sized puzzle of paths, you can pick a pumpkin to take home to carve. The maze is located 6 miles from Albemarle on Highway 73 West and is locally owned and operated by Kent and Amy Lowder.

Now calm your nerves with a moonlight paddle, the second night to enjoy the full moon on one of our beautiful lakes. God’s Country Outfitters is the host. The ghosts and goblins are still waiting for you among the corn stalks on this Sunday afternoon out at the Get Lost Corn Maze. And don’t forget to pick out that special pumpkin to carve in time for Halloween.

In case you missed it, we slipped into fall last weekend. But in this part of the world that doesn’t mean the end of summer weather. There’ll be plenty more warm days and nights to enjoy outside activity. We may have to say goodbye to those juicy tomato sandwiches, but there’ll be pumpkins to carve soon. And coming up later this month there’ll be a romantic trip on a local lake under a harvest moon. Stayed tuned.

For right now we have the 77^th Annual Stanly Regional Agricultural Fair from Wednesday through Sunday. Enjoy rides, produce, livestock and on Friday, the Figure 8 Race. This event is billed as having grown from a small attraction to one of the best attended and prestigious county fairs in the State of North Carolina.

On Friday evening at Pfeiffer University, the Pfeiffer Women’s Volleyball team takes on King at 7 pm. Go out and cheer on the home team.

On Saturday mornings, the Stanly County Farmers’ Market is still going strong down at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. Local vendors have great fresh produce and there are always delicious homemade goodies and a variety of crafts. Fill your basket for a weekend of good eating and treat yourself to the gift of a one-of-a-kind craft item made by a local artisan.

Now for a very special treat. The 2011 Uwharrie Storytelling Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 1, in the Fellowship Center of Central United Methodist Church at 172 North Second Street in Albemarle, NC. The storytelling takes place from 1 pm to 7 pm. Tickets are $5.00 per person (children 12 years and younger free) and are sold at Starnes Jewelers in downtown Albemarle and all Stanly County Public Libraries. Food may be purchased beginning at noon and continuing throughout the event. The featured storyteller will be Shelia Kay Adams. Popular regional favorites Ed “Moose” Duke and Randy Rayfield will also be performing. Local favorites Heather Ross Miller, Georgette Edgerton, Matt Steed, and Jeff Hamilton will each be sharing stories in their own unique style. Susan Sharples and Melanie Holles will be telling a variety of the late Fred Morgan’s very special Tales. Concurrent with the main storytelling schedule this year’s event will include a special segment for children from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Children attending the Children’s Tales must be accompanied by an appropriate number of adults. In addition to storytelling, Shelia Kay Adams will also be conducting storytelling and banjo workshops. On this Saturday the Pfeiffer Swimming team takes on Intrasquad Meet at 1 pm and out at the Stanly Community College the Men’s Baseball team takes on UCS Lancaster, also at 1 pm, at Don Montgomery Park. It’s hard to be in two places at once, but these teams would love your support.

For some unique Saturday night entertainment, check out the Demolition Derby. It takes place at 6 pm out at the Stanly County Fair Ground on Highway 52 South.

And for a complete change of pace, there’s Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series on Badin Lake at the Alcoa Boat Landing. Once in place you can sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet while you wait for that big fish with your name on it.

Sunday is the perfect day to take the whole family out to the Get Lost Corn Maze on Highway 73 West. This locally owned and operated family business run by Kent and Amy Lowder is a refreshing walk off the beaten path. It’s good safe family fun in a beautiful rural landscape.

As summer gives way to fall, Stanly County takes advantage of cooler weather and ramps up outdoor activities. Throughout the month we’ll see festivals, fishing tournaments, soccer games, races and outdoor movies at sunset. And lest we forget: this weekend, in a special outdoor program, Stanly County pays tribute to those who lost their lives ten years ago on 9/11.

This Thursday, in conjunction with the Best of Badin Festival to be held later this month, Better Badin is hosting a golf tournament at the Badin Inn Golf Resort and Club. Shot gun start is at 1 pm. There are prizes, food and drink. If you haven’t signed up to play, come out and cheer on the players…after they’ve made their shot!

Friday night is movie night in Locust and this Friday’s movie is Eclipse. Movies start at sunset and there will be a pre-show. Vendors are on hand so you can dine while you watch. The movies are free and always something the whole family can enjoy. The entertainment takes place in Locust Town Center.

Ready to stretch your legs? This Saturday the Red Bridge 5K Classic in Locust, organized by the West Stanly Rotary Club and now in its third year, has been tweaked so that it is less hilly. Part of the course will be on the Red Bridge Golf Course. If running is not your thing, come on out and cheer on the participants as they run for a good cause.

The Stanly County Farmers’ market is still going strong with plenty of fresh produce, flowers, homemade goodies and crafts. In operation for over 12 years, the market has welcomed many local vendors and many regular customers from Stanly County and the surrounding areas. This Saturday morning grab a basket and take a stroll through Market Station in downtown Albemarle to find just the right vegetables to grace your weekend table. And pick up a couple of those homemade goodies for dessert.

Take a short ride to Pfeiffer University to watch two exciting soccer games this afternoon. The Pfeiffer Women’s Soccer team takes on Belmont Abbey at 2 pm, and the Pfeiffer Men’s Soccer team takes on Belmont Abbey at 4 pm.

Hang that sign on your door that says “Gone Fishing” and take off for Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series on Badin Lake at the Alcoa boat landing. Or try your luck at the Adam and Eve Bass Fishing Tournament at Tuckertown from 8 am to 2 pm.

On Sunday evening September 11, 2011, the program, Stanly County Pays Tribute, will be held at Cannon Park across from the Stanly County YMCA in Albemarle. Special music will begin at 6:30 pm and will include selections from Uwharrie Sound and The Northmen. The program will begin promptly at 7 pm and will again be emceed by Voice of the Duke Blue Devils, Bob Harris. Following the theme of “America—after 9/11” the featured speakers will be Major General Rudy Rudisill, USA Ret., and Rev. Jason Hatley, both Stanly County natives. General Rudisill will convey his thoughts on life in Washington, DC after the 9/11 event. In case of rain, the event will take place at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center.

We have much to be thankful for in our rural county away from the hustle and bustle of the mainstream. Here, the pace is what you make it, with activities that range from high energy to laid-back. Come and enjoy what we have to offer.

As summer winds down, Stanly County weekends wind up with a wide variety of events. Fun-filled evenings pop up throughout the county like summer storms, from Badin in the east to Oakboro in the west and all points in between.
The music begins Thursday evening at Market Station in the county seat of Albemarle when the Thursdays at the Station free weekly concert series presents Four 13 Band. Showtime is 8 pm. Grab a cool drink and a snack from the concession stand, settle in your lawn chair and enjoy the entertainment. Donations, much appreciated, go to the performers.
On Friday, travel east to the quaint town of Badin for Pickin’ on the Porch at the Badin Inn. Stone Mountain provides live music on wide porches overlooking rolling hills and green fairways. Good food and drink are available to complete the evening.
Way out west, beyond Locust, Rocky River Vineyards host an exciting evening of music and dancing with a glass of wine and refreshments thrown in for good measure. The Chris Marks Band performs from 7 pm to 10 pm with music that ranges from country to bluegrass to rock. Wear your dancing shoes.
Down the road in Oakboro, it’s time for the ever-popular monthly Cruise-In and Burn-Out. The Mayberry Tribute Artists are on hand to meet and greet with Ernest T helping with the Burn-Out. Shiny cars, photo ops and friendly people bring thousands to this unique evening’s entertainment. The Cruise-In begins at 5 pm and the Burn-Out at 9 pm.
Burned out? Head for the lake and the slower pace of the Tillery King of the Night Fishing Tournament. It starts at 7 pm and ends at midnight with a weigh-in at the Swift Island landing.
Saturday morning brings local farmers to Albemarle’s Market Station for the Stanly County Farmers’ Market. Fresh produce is locally grown with ripe-and-ready fruits and veggies vying for attention with homemade goodies and crafts.
Pack those goodies away and hurry on down the road to where the Friends of the Agri-Civic Center present Stanly County Agri-Civic Day. The event, from 9 am to 4 pm, is full of family friendly fun, with tractor and antique equipment displays, balloon animals, The Hatley Family, food vendors and much more.
Back at Badin Lake, Southern Champion Fishing hosts a special God’s Country Anniversary Bass Fishing Tournament to celebrate the store’s 5 years in business. The competition begins at safe light with weigh-in at God’s Country in Albemarle.
Down river on Lake Tillery, BeachBum Ski and Surf is doing a Poker Run to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. The Run starts at noon and ends at 5 pm with live music in the evening. Sail in or drive in for great food and great music. Bring a chair.
Head west again, this time to Dennis Vineyards for the murder mystery dinner theater, “Cruising for Clues.” From 6:30 pm to 10 pm enjoy an evening of good wine and good food while you help figure out “who done it.”
Carnival Days are here at the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction. Participation in this event provides big opportunities for big prizes while helping the Chamber fund its many projects.
Now, back to the lake for Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series on Tuckertown at the Flat Creek Boat Landing.
North, south, east or west, there’s something for everyone this weekend in Stanly County. Heat continues as summer winds down, but weekends in Stanly County are filled with ‘cool’ activities. The choices are yours. So let’s get started.
Thursday brings the Locust Farmers’ Market to the front patio at Locust Ace Hardware. This weekly event offers fresh seasonal fruits and veggies ripe and ready to leap into your market basket.
Friday offers a variety of great choices. An Elvis themed weekend starts on this night with a Tour de Elvis 5K race. The course runs through downtown Albemarle and along the new Greenway.
Rocky River Vineyards present Exit 54 Band from 7 pm to 10 pm. Come ready to dance to classic rock, country and beach music.
Locust Movies in the Park present MegaMind. The movie, which starts at sunset, is something the whole family can enjoy and there is no cost. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Pickin’ on the Porch at the Badin Inn presents Brandon Snow from 6:30 pm to 10 pm. Grab a cool drink and relax on the Inn’s spacious porch.
Vision 4:13 presents August Summer Craze Tour at the Agri-Civic Center Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Featured is music by Dae Lee “Hip-Hop Recording Artist” and B-Shoc “YouTube Mega Hit.”
Turn down the volume a little and try your hand at the Friday Night on Tillery Fishing Tournament. It starts at 7 pm and ends with a weigh-in at the Swift Island Landing at midnight.

Start with a trip to the Stanly County Farmers’ Market at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. This hot wet summer has tomatoes practically jumping off their vines, they’re so eager to get to market, not to mention the squash, zucchini, melons, and beans. And leave room for those home-baked breads and pies.
Reed Gold Mine’s 2nd Saturday presents When Nature and Man Collide. Don’t miss this free program that begins at 10 am.
The Tour de Elvis Bicycle Tour starts and finishes at the City Lake Park. Three routes are available: 40K, 65K, and 100K.All routes have rest stops and SAG support.
The E’ssentials perform for Elvis at the Lake from 6 pm to 10 pm. Enjoy Elvis favorites, good food and refreshments and a display of 1950’s automobiles.
From 5 pm to 9 pm Dennis Vineyards presents “Music in the Vineyard.” This free show features music by John G, a unique blend of Soul, Jazz, Blues, Country and Classic Rock. Come ready to drink a glass of wine and dance the night away.
ATV Drag Races are the big attraction at Big Lick Festival Park. Gates open at 4 pm. There’ll be trophies for the winners and great food for the spectators. Bring a chair.
If you didn’t catch the big one on Friday, you have another chance tonight at the Adam and Eve Bass Fishing Tournament on Lake Tillery from 6:30 am to midnight.

From farmers’ markets overflowing with fresh produce, to free concerts in the cool of the evening, and from music on a fan-cooled porch to a theatrical evening of jazz and comedy. Create a Dreamscape, cast your line in a lake, or spin a disk in a tree-shaded park. Looking for relief from the heat? Browse through an air-conditioned gallery or museum, or indulge in the ultimate cool-off: a dip in one of our pristine lakes.
On Thursday from 2 pm to 6 pm the Farmers’ Market on Locust Ace Hardware’s front patio is the place to be. Vendors offer fresh seasonal fruits and veggies each week. Take your pick of the best of Stanly County produce.
Pack the veggies away and hurry down to Albemarle’s Market Station in time for the weekly free concert, Thursdays at the Station. Showtime is 8 pm and this week the series presents No1Uno Band. The show goes on come rain or shine, the concession stand is open and the music is great. Bring a lawn chair.
Pickin’ on the Porch at the Badin Inn is the place to be on Friday nights. This week, from 6:30 pm to 10 pm, live music from “Eden’s Gate” fills the air. Grab a cool drink or a bite to eat and settle in an old-fashioned rocking chair on a fan-cooled porch overlooking the beautiful hills of Badin’s golf course.
Over at the Agri-Civic Center more music fills the air this Friday. “A Grown and Sexy Event” is a great night of R & B-Jazz-Comedy, featuring Cloud 9, Billboard Charting Artist Xantha, Funk Jazz Fusion Band Groove 8, and comedy by Brian Witlow. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8:30 pm.

That big fish still hiding from you? Friday Night on Badin Lake may be the time to catch him. The fishing tournament starts at 7 pm and ends with a weigh-in at midnight at the Alcoa pier.

For the last 12 years, local vendors have sold produce, homemade goodies and crafts to the citizens of Stanly County and the surrounding area. Buyers arrive early for the pick of the crop, but there’s always plenty for the latecomers to choose from.
Down the road at the Falling Rivers Gallery, Stanly Art Guild member June Rollins presents Alcohol Ink Dreamscapes. Learn fascinating alcohol ink techniques from this accomplished artist, but register soon. Space is limited.
Ramp up the pace and try your hand at Disk Golf. The Albemarle Disk Golf Association tournaments are held on the first Saturday of each month at the Fox Chase Disc Golf Course at Chuck Morehead Park. Starting time is 10 am.

Summer days are winding down. Nights will be closing in and children going back to school before we know it, so enjoy the last of these Stanly County summer weekends

Imagine this: dancing under the stars, dining on a fan-cooled porch, a lively musical, an art show, baskets filled with delicious fresh veggies, fish jumping in a sparkling lake. You’ll find it all this weekend in Stanly County. Imagine that!
On Thursday afternoon in western Stanly you’ll find Locust Farmers’ Market on the Locust Ace Hardware front patio. From 2 pm to 6 pm vendors fill their stalls with baskets brimming with seasonal fruit and vegetables.
Back in downtown Albemarle the Stanly Art Guild presents its Summer Art Explosion at the Falling Rivers Gallery. The show runs through August 5, 2011 and features painting, photography and sculpture. The Gallery also features a permanent collection of the work of local artists, all of which is for sale. The Gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays
For your evening entertainment there’s no place better than Market Station. This week, Thursdays at the Station free concert series presents Wing and a Prayer Band. The performance starts at 8 pm. The concession stand is open, so bring your lawn chair and relax to good music in the cool of the evening.
There are lots of choices for your evening entertainment on Friday.
Uwharrie Players present All Shook Up at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. The performance combines all-time favorite Elvis hits with a healthy dose of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. This is surefire fun for rock and roll fans of all ages. The show runs through Sunday night.
There’s dancing, wine and refreshments waiting for you at Rocky River Vineyards. “Jen and Tonic” perform music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Bring your dancing shoes.
Over at the Badin Inn you’ll find Pickin’ on the Porch with live music from The Invaders Band. There’s a fully-stocked bar and food and drink available, or you can just sit and enjoy the music on this fan-cooled porch overlooking Badin’s beautiful golf course.
For a quiet evening on the lake there’s the Friday Night on Tillery Fishing Tournament. It starts at 7 pm and ends at midnight with a weigh-in at the Swift Island Landing.
Saturday morning is the time to head to Market Station for the weekly Stanly County Farmers’ Market. For over twelve years local vendors have been selling seasonal fruits and vegetables, homemade goodies and crafts to Stanly County residents. Come and fill your bag or basket with the best Stanly County has to offer.
Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament gets underway on Tuckertown reservoir at the Flat Creek Landing on Saturday. Crank up the bass boat and go in search of that big one.
You don’t have to use your imagination in order to enjoy your weekend. You can enjoy it ‘for real’ right here in Stanly County.

What’s hot in Stanly County this weekend apart from the weather? Plenty, with events that range from art shows to theatrical performances, from farmers’ markets to cruise-ins, from golf to an historic re-enactment, and lots of fishing tournaments. So polish up the chrome on granddad’s car, dust off the golf clubs, crank up the bass boat and let’s go. We’re steppin’ out this weekend.
Begin by filling your basket at the Locust Farmers’ Market on Thursday after noon. From 2 pm to 6 pm stalls on the front patio of Locust Ace hardware will offer fresh fruit and veggies ready to prepare for your weekend dining.
In downtown Albemarle take a leisurely stroll through Falling Rivers Gallery to admire a Summer Art Explosion that features painting, photography and sculpture. This Stanly Arts Guild show runs through August 5, 2011.
In the cool of the evening, the Market Station free concert series, Thursdays at the Station, presents The Way of the Cross Band. Showtime is 8 pm and the concession stand is open. Don’t forget your lawn chair.
Friday now, and it’s the fourth one in the month so it’s time to join the thousands of attendees at the Oakboro cruise-in and burn-out. Cars, often as many as 500, start arriving at 3 pm, the cruise-in starts at 5 pm and the burn-out begins at 9 pm. You don’t want to miss this unique evening’s entertainment.
For a complete change of pace hurry on down to the Agri-Civic Center where the Uwharrie Players present All Shook Up. Lots of Elvis hits make this surefire fun for rock n’ roll fans of all ages. Performances are this weekend and next weekend only.
Looking for something a little quieter than burn-outs and rock n roll? Crank up the bass boat and head out on to Badin Lake for the Friday Night on Badin Lake Fishing Tournament. It starts at 7pm and ends at midnight with a weigh-in at the Alcoa pier.
Saturday morning is the time to head to Market Station in Albemarle for the Stanly County Farmers’ Market. Come early or sleep in and wander down later, there’s always plenty of delicious produce to pick from.
At the Badin Inn Golf and Resort Club, the Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament starts at 10 am and includes lunch, prizes and wine tasting from Stony Mountain Vineyards.
The Lyme Disease Walk takes place at City Lake Park at 9:00am. Shirts and raffle tickets will be on sale.
For an all-day outing, the Fork Farm invites you to attend the 231st anniversary celebration of the Battle of Colson’s Mill. The event features a re-enactment, local crafters and artisans, food vendors and a tour of the Fork Farm. If you haven’t yet visited this beautiful venue this is the perfect occasion to do so.
Now for some more fishing: Saturday Nights on Badin Lake Tournament starts at 11 pm and ends at 7 am with a weigh-in at the Alcoa pier; Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series gets under way at the Alcoa boat landing; The Championship Fishing Yadkin Division 2011 starts at Circle Drive Ramp on Badin Lake.
Looks like a busy weekend. But don’t worry. If you choose to sit this one out there are plenty more events coming up. We’ll keep you posted.

Afternoon storms and cool rain-washed mornings, corn as high as an elephants eye, gardens overflowing with Mother Nature’s bounty: it’s summer in Stanly County.
Every Thursday some of that summer bounty is offered at the Locust community’s weekly Farmers’ Market. From 2 pm to 6 pm on the front patio of Locust Ace Hardware vendors pack their stalls with fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies ready for good weekend eating.
Heat and humidity are the price we pay for overflowing gardens and fresh produce, so once in a while it’s nice to find a cool softly-lit space where we can browse in comfort among beautiful art. Falling Rivers Gallery in downtown Albemarle is the place. Begin your weekend entertainment here this Thursday with the Summer Art Explosion. Sponsored by the Stanly County Art Guild, the show includes paintings, sculpture and photography by area artists. The show runs through August 5, 2011.
An Advanced Junior Golf Camp is in progress at the Badin Inn Golf Resort & Club for ages 12-18 from 9 am to 1 pm. Lunch is included. Check out those little…and not so little…potential Tigers.
In the cool of the evening, take a walk down the street to Market Station to hear Dry Run Bluegrass Band. The show, part of the Thursdays at the Station concert series put on by the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department, begins at 8 pm regardless of weather. A concession stand is open, so bring your lawn chair and sit back for some fine music. The concerts are free but donations for the musicians are welcome.
Friday night it’s back to Locust for the third Friday of the month Cruise-in from 5 pm to 9 pm at the Locust City Center. Vendors and local restaurants are on tap.
Stay on at the same location for the Locust Concert Series as they present County Line Band.
Then head to Rocky River Vineyards where the Mellon Belly Band performs music that includes beach, country, bluegrass, blues and classic rock. Don’t forget your dancing shoes. Wine and refreshments are available.
Ready for more dancing? You’re invited by the Stanly County Shrine Club “Society of Tarheel Shaggers” to kick up your heels from 8 pm to midnight at the Stanly County Shrine Club on City Lake Road. House DJ Gene Hensley will keep a patriotic theme going so, if the spirit moves, wear your best red, white and blue outfit. Come early for free beginners shag lessons.
Time to cool down and take up that fishing rod for some quiet relaxation at the Friday Night on Tillery Fishing Tournament. It starts at 7 pm and ends at midnight with a weigh-in at the Swift Island Landing.
The fish are waiting for early risers on Saturday morning as the Adam and Eve Bass Fishing Tournament gets under way at Badin Lake at 6:30 am and finishes at 12:30 pm.
If fishing is not your cup of tea, grab a big basket and head downtown Albemarle to Market Station for the weekly Stanly County Farmers’ Market. The bountiful gardens of area farmers have produced huge watermelons, ripe blueberries, bright yellow squash, lush red tomatoes, and cool green cucumbers. You’ll find plants and herbs and pottery and homemade breads all piled on stalls and overflowing into farm baskets. Come early for the pick of the crop.
Pack those veggies away and head for Little Creek Music Park at 6 pm to hear Toby Creek. There’ll be food available so bring your lawn chair and relax for the evening.
Still waiting for that big catch? Then wrap up your weekend with the Saturday Nights on Badin Fishing Tournament. It starts at 7 pm and ends at midnight with a weigh-in at the Alcoa pier.
It’s summer in Stanly County, and the weekends are a time to polish up the chrome for a cruise-in, dust off your dancing shoes, grab a rod and reel and head for the lake, play a little golf, browse through an art gallery or unpack your lawn chair and settle down for an evening of music under the stars.

It’s summertime and the heat is on, but Stanly County has some ‘cool’ events to tempt you out of the house this week. So gather up friends and family and set off to enjoy them.
On Thursday afternoon, Locust Town Center Merchant’s Association has collaborated with the Rural Cooperative Extension to bring a Farmers’ Market to the front patio of Locust Ace Hardware. Here you can take your pick from brimming baskets of fruit and veggies.
Then it’s back to Albemarle downtown for Thursdays at the Station, a weekly series of free concerts put on at Market Station by the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department. This week it’s the Singing Americans Band. Showtime is 8 pm and the concession stand is open during the event. Grab a cool drink, settle into your lawn chair and get ready to enjoy some fine entertainment.
Friday at sunset with the heat of the day subsiding, it’s time to take the whole family to Locust to enjoy a Movie in the Park. This week the movie is Grease. There is a pre-show before the main feature and vendors are set up to enable you to have a meal while you watch the movie. And the event is free. How ‘cool’ is that?
On Saturday morning it’s time to rise early and hurry to Albemarle for the pick of the crop at the Stanly County Farmers’ Market. For over twelve years local farmers have brought their fresh seasonal produce to town to sell at this weekly event. Fruits and vegetables are coming into their peak and under the canopy of Market Station vendors’ tables are loaded with squash, tomatoes, green beans and much more. Fill your basket, but leave a little space for that homemade cake or pie.
Two fishing tournaments top off this summer weekend. Saturday Nights on Badin Lake Fishing Tournament starts at 7 pm and ends with a weigh-in at midnight at the Alcoa Pier. Up the road, or should we say upstream, Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series gets underway at Tuckertown’s Flat Creek Boat Landing. Rumor has it the fish are really biting, so bait that hook and try for the big one.

Summer weekends are made for fun. There are parks and pools and lakes and rivers scattered in and around Stanly County, places where you can enjoy a variety of activities or where you can find a shady spot to simply sit and enjoy our beautiful scenery. Stanly County is a ‘cool’ place.

4th of July Festivities

America celebrates its birthday this weekend and the western Stanly County town of Oakboro puts on a show that is the epitome of small town July 4th celebrations. The town gets an early start to the festivities during the week, but Monday is the day it lets it all hang out from the early morning parade to the late evening fireworks. This is the 53rd year of the Annual Oakboro 4th of July Celebration, an event not to be missed.
Begin your weekend on Thursday afternoon by checking out Locust’s newest event: a weekly Farmers’ Market. On the front patio of Locust Ace Hardware from 2 pm to 6 pm vendors offer fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables at reasonable prices.
As the Locust market closes at 6 pm the rides open on the midway at Oakboro and the Little Miss 4th of July pageant gets underway as the town gets a head start on the July 4th celebration.
Friday night will see the rides open again on the Oakboro midway and at 8pm Sea Cruz performs on the Union Power stage.
Then it’s time for the Tillery Fishing Tournament starting at 7 pm with weigh-in at midnight at the Swift Island landing.
Saturday morning brings local farmers to the weekly Stanly County Farmers’ Market. This market has been in operation at Market Station in downtown Albemarle for over 12 years and is the place to find fresh local produce, home-baked breads and cakes and locally made crafts. Bring a basket and fill it to the brim.
Saturday night in Oakboro sees on-going attractions with rides on the midway, a firefighters’ competition and the Holiday Band on stage as the town leads up to its big July 4th finale.
After a spin on the midway take a spin on the dance floor over at Rocky River Vineyards as they celebrate the 4th with a Beach, Boogie and Blues theme while the Cruize Control Band performs classic rock, country and beach.
For a great ending to your Saturday activities, gather at the river at dark for the Woodrun Fireworks display on Lake Tillery. Nothing beats the sight of exploding stars reflected in calm waters.
Sunday at 3 pm the Stanly County Singing Americans give a free concert at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center and you can bet they’ll be performing some good old American classics to celebrate the 4th. All ages are welcome.
Monday and it’s Happy Birthday to America. Get your celebration off to an energetic start with the Vac and Dash Watermelon Run at Morrow Mountain State Park.
Then it’s on to Oakboro where the 4th of July Parade starts at 9 am, rides open on the midway at 10 am and BBQ lunch is served at the Fire Department. At 11 am Mayor Joyce Little gives the invocation and leads the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem before the Flag Raising Ceremony. Miss Stanly County Fire Queen is chosen, the Atlantic Groove Band performs on stage and the celebration ends with an 11:30 pm fireworks show.

Come celebrate the glorious Fourth with the small communities in this quiet corner of our beautiful country.

Music is in the air this weekend in Stanly County. Sounds spill from vineyards, cruise-ins and community parks as DJ’s spin their discs and live bands with names like Crystal River and The Tim Clark Band perform. Dance, tap your toes or just sit and listen. There’s also plenty of unique entertainment to go along with the music: a tractor pull, a cruise-in and burnout and a big 100 year birthday party celebration by a local bank.
Thursday at the Station is the place to start. The weekly free concert goes on rain or shine so bring a lawn chair, a pocketful of change for the concessions and sit back and enjoy the sounds of Crystal River Band.
Down the road at Falling Rivers Gallery the Photographic Perspective show continues, displaying area photographers’ unique views of Stanly County.
On Friday ramp up the pace with dancing, wine and refreshments at Rocky River Vineyards as Todd Dyre performs DJ Music for Disco Theme Night.
This Friday and Saturday are big nights at Big Lick when the Big Lick Truck and Tractor Pull gets underway. Gates open at 5pm. Pulling starts at 7 pm. Truck classes range from Pro Street 4X4 Gas to Bad Boys Super Stock Diesel 4X4. Tractor classes are Hot Farm and Super Farm.
For those who really want to ramp up the pace, Saturday brings the third annual Oakboro Freedom 5K race.
Now slow down and take a leisurely stroll through the Stanly County Farmers’ Market in Albemarle’s Market Station. Take your time picking out that perfect cantaloupe or those heirloom tomatoes as you fill your basket with local produce and home-made baked goods.
On Saturday evening everyone is invited to join Home Savings Bank as they celebrate 100 years of banking at their downtown Albemarle location. There’s food, drink and lots of entertainment for ages 2 to 92. Come and wish the bank Happy Birthday as you dance to the music of The Craig Woolard Band.
Our beautiful lakes beckon with two fishing tournaments this Saturday: Russell’s Bass Fishing Tournament Series on Tuckertown at the Flat Creek Boat Landing and Saturday Nights on Badin Lake Fishing Tournament.
Sunday, Oakboro gets ready for its 53rd Annual 4th of July Celebration with a Talent Show sign-up and registration at First Baptist Church. Watch this space for listings of all the ‘goings-on’ at this great festival.
And the music plays on. The Tim Clark Band performs at Norwood’s Summer Concert Series from 2-5 pm at Darrell Almond Community Park.
Stanly County weekends fill with the sights and sounds of summer: children’s laughter, the plop of a fish as it leaps in the shadows, tractors revving, runners running, baskets laden with produce, hot dogs sizzling on a grill…and music under the stars.

Beach Bums Ski & Surf has hosted this event for the past two years and have partnered with Hunter Homes Realty and The Eagles Nest at Tillery Tradition to bring you an amped up version this year! An over view of Stanly County with its serene lakes and hazy blue hills might give an impression of tranquility. We certainly offer that in abundance, but those lakes also offer water skiing, kayaking and boating and those hazy hills are crisscrossed with hiking trails, horse trails and camp sites. Dip down into the small communities that make up our county and you’ll find even more activity.
Begin in the county seat of Albemarle where a photography show at Falling Rivers Gallery gives a unique view of our locality. Photographic Perspective 2011 presents local scenes captured by area photographers from their own distinctive point of view.
Just down the road from the Gallery, Thursdays at the Station continues its not-to-be-missed free weekly concerts. The music starts at 8 pm, come rain or come shine, but come a little early and visit the concession stand, settle in your lawn chair and get ready to enjoy the Blue Horizon Band.
On Friday evening head west to the Locust Town Center where the Locust Cruise-In and Concert Series take place; presenting, “Atlantic Groove”. Vendors and local restaurants are on hand to offer a variety of goodies.
There’s nothing like a little fishing in the cool of the evening. Tillery Fishing Tournament begins at 7 pm on Friday with weigh-in at midnight at the Swift Island Landing. Take a cooler and a blanket and wait for that big one you know is lurking.
You’ll need some good fresh veggies to go with that fish you caught—or maybe bought--and the Saturday Farmers’ Market at Albemarle’s Market Station is the place to find them. You’ll also find fruit, flowers, homemade breads, crafts and more.
Albemarle Academy of Dance recitals are scheduled this Saturday at the Agri-Civic Center. Stop by to see these talented young dancers perform.
Later in the day drop by Little Creek Music Park to hear Cabin Creek. The music starts at 6 pm. Food is available so just bring a lawn chair and settle down for some good entertainment.
Another not-to-be-missed event is the Third Annual Poker Run on Lake Tillery. Food is cooked on site, the Hard Tymes Band plays from 7 pm until 10 pm and all profits go to the Masonic Children’s Home. Beach Bums, Hunter Homes Realty and the Eagles Nest at Tillery hold this event at Beach Bums in Norwood.
You still haven’t caught that big fish? Try your luck again at the Saturday Night on Badin Lake Fishing Tournament. It begins at 11 pm and ends at 7 am with weigh-in at the Alcoa Pier.

There’s gold and fish and rubber ducks floating around Stanly County this weekend, not to mention porks and corks, and music and markets and movies. The kids are out of school and there’s no shortage of events to celebrate the beginning of their summer holiday and plenty for the rest of us to enjoy as we begin these long lazy days of summer.

Let’s begin our weekend on Thursday. In downtown Albemarle, Falling Rivers Gallery is displaying a unique show called Photographic Perspective 2011 that features beautiful photographs of local scenes.
After viewing the photos, wander on down the hill to Market Station to hear the music of The Kollection Band. The performance is part of the regular series of free come-rain-or-come-shine concerts called Thursdays at the Station. Bring a lawn chair, There’s a concession stand and showtime is 8 pm.

Friday offers a choice of dancing, movies and fishing.
From 7 pm to 10 pm you can dance to the music of Exit 54 Band at Rocky River Vineyards as they perform classic rock, country and beach music.
Take in a movie at Locust’s unique Movies in the Park shown at the Athletic Complex #4. This Friday it’s Despicable Me. The show starts at sunset, there’s a pre-show and it’s all free.
How about a little fishing after the movie? Friday Nights on Badin Lake Tournament starts at 7 pm and the weigh-in is at the Alcoa pier at midnight. That big one is just waiting for you in the shadows.

Saturday brings the lovely sights and aromas of the fruits, vegetables, flowers and crafts of the Stanly County Farmers’ Market. Come fill your basket with fresh local produce.
Stanly County Museum presents its ongoing program The Second Saturday at the Museum. For students in 4th to 7th grades, the program is from 1 pm to 3 pm and varies each month. Registration is required, a light snack is included and there is no charge.
Now let’s go for the gold. Reed Gold Mine presents Second Saturday Pan-O-Lympics. Here you can participate in a variety of activities related to gold mining including the 22nd Annual Open Gold Panning Competition. Bet there’s a nugget sitting waiting for you there.
Now for those rubber ducks. They’ll be floating by at City Lake Park as part of Group Homes for the Autistic Rubber Duck Derby from 11 am to 3 pm. Here’s your chance to back a Derby winner.
The Stanly County Agri-Civic Center is a lively place to spend your Saturday night as D.P.I.C., K Money and Woodland Entertainment present “WE ALL IN” with R-Syn, Money Baggz and Kanivan. There’s the concert, comedy, Rip the Runway, Diva Contest and more. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Go early and check out the 704 Custom Car Show that afternoon.

Something new is going on at Stony Mountain Vineyards this Saturday from noon until 8 pm: the First Annual Porks and Corks featuring a great DJ, BBQ and of course wonderful wine.
If you still can’t find something to do on Saturday night in Stanly County—and we’re breathless from chasing down all these events—mosey out to Badin Lake for the Saturday Nights on Badin Lake Fishing Tournament and see if that big fish is still waiting
If you don’t catch him then, try your luck Sunday at the Fishing Addiction Bass Trail at Badin Lake Circle drive.

Somewhere out there in Stanly County this weekend is a fish with your name on it, or perhaps it’s a rubber duck, or a special bottle of wine. It could also be a nugget of gold or simply a basket full of red ripe juicy tomatoes. Whatever it is, it’s out there waiting for you.

The course starts with a 750m open swim through Badin Lake followed by a challenging 12 mile Bike through the rolling hills of Stanly County. This Weekend in Stanly County

It’s another three weeks until the first day of summer, but you can’t tell that by the weather. Memorial Day has come and gone, pools are open, schools are out in a week and Stanly County’s ready for those weekend mini-vacations.
A great place to start is an evening at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. The Deeper Shade of Blue Band—doesn’t that name cool you off?—performs this week at the regular Thursdays at the Station event put on by Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department. Showtime is 8 pm come rain or shine. The concert is free and there’s a concession stand. Bring a lawn chair, and if you care to make a donation it will go to the band.
Cool off after a hot day with Friday Nights at the Tillery Fishing Tournament. The event starts at 7 pm and ends at midnight with a weigh-in at the Swift Island Landing.
There are more fish waiting to be caught on Saturday, this time from City Lake Park at the Tenth Annual Fish for Fun Day. The event is co-sponsored by AP&R and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and will feature door prizes, fishing tackle loaners and lots of fishing. It all begins at 10 am.
There’ll be lots of splashing out at Badin Lake early on Saturday morning, but it won’t be the fish. At 8 am, dozens of swimmers take to the water behind Badin Town Hall on the first lap of the Fourth Annual Historic Badin Triathlon. After a 750 meter swim, they’ll take an 11.4 mile bike ride followed by a 5K run. Whew! Come on out and cheer on these hardy athletes.
Back in Albemarle the Stanly County Farmers’ Market spreads its wares of fresh produce, jams, jellies, flowers and crafts. Step into the welcome shade of the pavilion and take a deep breath of nature’s bounty before you fill your shopping basket.
Later on Saturday, check out Melissa Kathleen’s School of Dance Recital at the Agri-Civic Center and watch talented young dancers perform for family and friends.
And if you can’t get enough fishing, try the Adam and Eve Bass Fishing Tournament at Badin Lake.
On Sunday, if you’ve cleaned all those fish and iced them down, head to Chuck Morehead Park to watch the Albemarle Disc Golf Association Tournament. These are held on the first Saturday of every month at the Fox Chase Disc Golf Course.

Finally, ride to the top of Morrow Mountain, sit on a cool stone wall and let your troubles slip away as you feast your eyes on the lush green landscape of our beautiful county.

The weather is heating up and weekend activity in Stanly County is heating up right along with it. Bands are tuning up, horses are being saddled, fresh produce is ripe and ready, classic cars are getting a last polish and those old tires are ready to explode for your entertainment. We’ll explain that last comment in a moment. Meanwhile, read on to find a list of activities you won’t want to miss.
Every Thursday at 8 pm come rain or shine Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department puts on a concert at Albemarle’s Market Station. It’s free and there’s a concession stand. This Thursday pack your lawn chair and come on down to hear the Forever Forgiven Band.

Friday, those shiny classic cars will line the streets of Oakboro for the town’s monthly Cruise-in. The event starts at 5 pm. If the weather’s pretty you’ll find around 500 cars and 6,000 people enjoying this unique event. Take some photos, grab some goodies from the concession stands and then at 9 pm head over to the Burn-out to watch cars with locked brakes spin their tires until they burn. When a tire pops be sure to join in the hooting and the hollering. It’s part of the fun.
For a very different Friday event, dust off those dancing shoes and head to Rocky River Vineyards for the first of their summer concerts. From 7 pm to 10 pm, the Salisbury Swing Band performs music to dance to. $20 includes a glass of wine and refreshments.

Saturday is time to saddle up that horse and take advantage of a two-day clinic by award winning Canadian equestrian, Rebecca Howard. The event takes place at the beautiful Fork Stables, a world class equestrian facility located in Norwood. All level of riders and horses are welcome.
Saturday is also time to visit the Stanly County Farmers’ Market to find fresh home grown produce fit for a King’s table. Local vendors sell everything from vegetables to jams and jellies to flowers and crafts. Come early for the pick of the crop.
Want to see talent in the making? Don’t miss the Dimensions Dance Arts Recital at the Stanly Agri-Civic Center.
And try your own talent at a ceramic sculpture workshop with Joe Rock from White Rock Art Studio in Mint Hill. The workshop is held at the Falling Rivers Gallery in downtown Albemarle.
On Sunday, to complete your weekend, head down to Norwood and laze in the Darrell Almond Community Park from 2 pm to 5 pm as you listen to a summer concert featuring Too Much Sylvia.
Those long golden days of summer stretch before us and weekends in Stanly County beckon with choices galore.

Create your own pace this weekend. From art galleries to cruise-ins, from heritage festivals to music under the stars, our deceptively quiet county has something for everyone. Go take a hike up Morrow Mountain, catch the big one in one of our rivers or lakes, water ski, cycle or run. Have more urbane pleasures in mind? How about art galleries, heritage festivals and book readings?
Let’s get down to details. The Stanly Arts Guild and Falling Rivers Gallery have a permanent exhibition of work by local artists, but from now until May 21 they are presenting the added attraction of work of a more crafty nature: Hop into Spring Arts and Craft Show. And there’s more at this unique downtown Albemarle venue. This weekend and for the next ten days the Gallery presents Art Exhibit: Relay for Life, a book created by Kelly Story of her photographs of cancer survivors, victors and their loved ones.
In the mood for a literary luncheon? Author, poet and former photojournalist from Monroe, NC, Barbara Funderburk, is a guest at the Stanly County Senior Center. Her latest book is Count Their Lives in Womanyears.
Thursdays at the Station concert series continues to provide weekly free concerts. Rain or shine, the show goes on. This week it’s Borderlyne, so bring your lawn chair, sip a coke from the concession stand and make a donation to further the cause.
On Friday head for Locust where every third Friday of the month the town hosts a cruise-in at the Locust City Center. This Friday they’ll have vendors and local restaurants and later in the evening the Locust Concert Series presents SummerDaze Band.
The early bird catches the worm. OK. So it’s Saturday and the Farmers’ Market doesn’t sell worms, but the ‘early bird’ gets the pick of the fresh produce grown by local farmers at the Saturday Stanly County Farmers’ Market. There are also local homemade goodies, flowers, plants and crafts to choose from, and all at reasonable prices.
Stanfield has a unique heritage and on Saturday they’ll celebrate the history of their community with a Stanfield Heritage Festival. The emphasis is on craftsmanship from the past and the visitor will have the opportunity to buy handmade items from many area vendors. There’ll be a tribute to railroads, agriculture, milling and ginning, antique tractors and vehicles, woodworking, quilting and more.
Head over to the Little Creek Music Park on Saturday for the Little Creek Music Park Spring Festival featuring Southern Junction, Helms Family and the Grass Strings. There are door prizes and a dance floor. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy.
And last but by no means least take the family over to the Stanly County Fairgrounds for the 2nd Annual Spring Figure 8 Race for an evening of food, fun, racing and car crashing.

Unique, educational, laid-back, we have it all in the way of activities here in Stanly County. All you have to do is show up.

Dwight Eudy, chairman of the grounds committee at the Stanly County Museum, will help the students learn how current gardening practices differ from methods used in the past. Students will discover how throughout history plants have been used for medicinal and aesthetic purposes. They will find out when certain plants were introduced into this county. Weather permitting; the program will also include a tour of the gardens at the Marks and Snuggs houses. While visiting the gardens students will have an opportunity to see if they can identify some of the plants they learned about during the program.

This Weekend in Stanly County

The weather has been outstanding lately! It’s nice to see that Mother Nature didn’t decide to skip spring and head directly into summer this year! It’s been nice being able to attend the events that take place in this great County and this weekend is packed with great things to do again!
It all starts on Thursday with Mr. David Holt at the Stanly County Senior Center. Mr. Holt is a very accomplished entertainer, storyteller, historian and musician. This performance is one of the first events celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Senior Center. There will be plenty of performances from May till November in honor of this Celebration!
If you’re looking to attend a play then you’re in luck. Both, “The Uwharrie Players” and, “The West Stanly Players” are having performances this weekend. The Uwharrie Players are performing, “Dearly Departed” which is a hilarious story even though it has a funeral as the back-story. This is one play that you have to see! The West Stanly Players are performing, “You can’t take it with you” which is a story about what the important things in life are! So, if you’re in the mood for a play then The Uwharrie Players and The West Stanly Players would love to see you in the audience.
The Stanly County Agri-Civic Center is will have the Platinum National Dance Competition “Regional’s” this weekend. The Agri-Civic Center always books great performances so this should be a great event.
Fishing on Badin Lake and Lake Tillery has always been a favorite pastime for locals. On Saturday, there will be a ton of people on Badin Lake competing for a $1,000 grand prize at the 7th Annual Hospice of Stanly County Bass Tournament. The locals say that there is at least one nice size Bass under every pier on Badin. Hopefully we’ll get to see some huge fish come out of the lake!
Don’t forget about the Farmer’s Market that takes place in Downtown Albemarle. It’s great to be able to get locally grown produce while meeting the Farmer who grew everything. There are usually quite a few people there so get there early!

Weekend Fun in Stanly County

The amount of events that took place last weekend surely broke a record! There were tons of things to do for everyone and they were taking place in almost every municipality in Stanly County. This weekend looks a little calmer but there still is plenty of fun to be had in the area!
If you haven’t ever been to the Fork Farm & Stables in Norwood then this is your chance to check it out. They are hosting a Fun Shoot at their World Class Shooting Facility. For a mere $50.00 you get to take a shot at 100 targets at 12 different stations throughout the course. They are offering prizes for the highest scorers. The weather looks like it’s going to be great and the facility is wonderful so swing by and take a shot at winning a prize!!!
The Uwharrie Players are one of many performing arts groups within Stanly County. This weekend they will be performing “Dearly Departed” at the Albemarle High School Auditorium. If you’ve never heard of the play it is hilarious and the Uwharrie Players are experts when it comes to comedy. You will not want to miss this show!

The Beach Blast 5K will take place on Saturday in Downtown Albemarle with around 500 runners competing! Vac & Dash and the Uwharrie Running Club always host this event and it keeps growing and growing. This year they capped the race at 500 runners so that it would be a quality race! If you're up for the challenge, give them a call!
If you’re looking to get some locally grown produce then Downtown Albemarle has just what you’re looking for. The Farmer’s Market, which takes place at Market Station in Downtown Albemarle, has plenty of fresh locally grown produce! It’s also a great way to get to know the local Farmer’s and to see what they recommend during the different times of year!
There is always something going on in the Stanly County area. Even if there isn’t an event taking place, there are tons of different options for everyone; especially for the Outdoor Enthusiast!

This Weekend in Stanly County is packed with things-to-do!!!!

The big Easter Weekend is over and things are starting to settle back down. However, this weekend is jam-packed with things to do for the entire family. Luckily, the weatherman said it’s supposed to be nice this weekend. We’ll see if his prediction holds true!
Starting things off this weekend is the Big Lick Festival Park Truck & Tractor Pull. If you haven’t ever been to a Tractor Pull it is definitely a new and exciting experience that must be attended at least once! The Park is located right beside Hinson’s Auction House in Oakboro and they have been having events and auctions here for years.
In addition, the Town of Norwood is celebrating their 18th Annual Arbor Day Festival this weekend. Norwood always puts on a great show for the attendees and the best part is it’s FREE! Each year they continue to grow and grow by adding more events and bigger music names to the roster. Even with the growth they still have the local Spelling Bee that is always a parent’s favorite part of the weekend!
“WagFest” is a unique name for an event this weekend that helps out the Stanly County Humane Society. It’s the only Stanly County event for you and your dog! They have a walk-a-thon to help raise money for the Humane Society, a dunking booth with the Animal Control Officers, Doggie Contest and unique events that are just fun! No matter what age you are you can have a blast at “WagFest!” Right after the “WagFest” event, there will be a Spring Fling Raffle hosted by the Friends of the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center! They are selling 1500 tickets at $20.00 for a Raffle that has a ton of prizes. The top prize is a $7,000 Zero Turn Mower. With only 1500 tickets being sold and over two dozen prizes, your chances of winning are very good!
If you’re in the mood to taste a little wine while your enjoying the weekend, Rocky River Vineyard is hosting a Spring Festival! They always have great music at their events, great artwork and best of all, Wonderful Wine. Don’t forget about the other Vineyards in the area! They each have their unique niche and are a wonderful day trip for the weekend!

The ACC Men's Golf Championship will be kicking off their festivities on Friday, April 22 at 8:00am! This is the tenth consecutive year that the event has taken place at The Old North State Club however; the tournament has been played at Old North State Club a total of fifteen times! The course has been ranked the number 1 private golf course in North Carolina and is just an outstanding Golf Course!

Play starts at 8:00am ech day and is open to the public. In addition to the beautiful course, the area itself is absolutley beautiful!

Whew, did we have some crazy weather this weekend or what! Unfortunately a few of the events that were planned had to be cancelled due to the weather but, it’s April and the weather is always crazy in April!

This weekend is going to be a great weekend to check out a few things happening in the Stanly County area! Of course the Largest North Carolina Downtown Cruise-In will take place in Oakboro this Friday, April 22, 2011! They usually have anywhere from 400-500 cars lined up on the street or cruising the main drag! If you’re a car or truck enthusiast, there is something in Oakboro that will catch your eye! There are usually around 3,000 – 5, 000 people in attendance just hanging out with friends and checking out the customized cars! Make sure you check it out if you’re in the area!

Saturday will be a great day for the kids! Head out to City Lake Park for the Albemarle Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Albemarle Parks & Recreation Department. Mr. Bunny will be on hand for pictures and there will be prizes for the golden eggs! The Easter Egg Hunt will start at 11:00am so, don’t be late! Also on Saturday, the Farmer’s Market in Downtown Albemarle will have plenty of fruits and vegetables! The Market starts at 7:00am and is a great way to spend a Saturday Morning! After the Market, Morgan Ridge Vineyards is hosting a “Shrimp & Grits Spring Festival!” Starting at 2:00pm they will be serving Shrimp & Grits and of course their wonderful wine while you’re sitting back enjoying the sounds of a Swing Band! Morgan Ridge Vineyards is a new Vineyard that opened up right outside of Richfield!

There are also plenty of College Athletics taking place at Pfeiffer University and Stanly Community College, so get out and enjoy your weekend in Stanly County!

Spring in Stanly County is a bit unique with the weather changing on a daily basis. One day it’s 85 and sunny and the next it’s 40 and raining! You’ve just got to love North Carolina weather.

Despite the every changing weather conditions, there are a few events that take place in April as well. The Fork Farm & Stables just finished up their “Outdoor Heritage Days” event, the “Big Lick Bluegrass Festival” was last weekend as well! This weekend Oakboro District Park is hosting the “Spring into the Park” event which will have a ton of things to do for the entire family! If you haven’t been to Oakboro’s Park, it’s absolutely beautiful! Also, the Locust Cruise-In will take place this Friday and the Oakboro Cruise-In will take place next Friday! These are a ton of fun to attend with friends and family! It’s just a fun time to hang out with everybody and check out some really nice cars! Coming up later this month is the “Arbor Day Festival” in Norwood! This festival brings in plenty of people to Downtown Norwood for the day to look at locally made items, listen to great music, taste some wonderful food and just have a great time!

Spring is also the time to get ready for the Lake! Lake Tillery and Badin Lake are two of the best lakes around. There are over 10,000 acres of water in both the lakes combined, that’s 3,260,000,000 gallons of water! Whatever your plans are this spring, have fun but be safe!

FRANC D'AMBROSIO is best known for his work in The Phantom of the Opera. His career, however, goes far beyond one role. In film, Franc sang the Academy Award winning song in "Godfather III." Hearing him sing, Luciano Pavarotti invited Franc to study in Italy. Franc has worked with Barry Manilow, and sung for Brian Boitano, Dorothy Hamill, and Michael Bolton TV specials. The Stanly Regional Foundation will host a “Jeans & Jewels” themed fundraiser at the Lodge on Hatley Farm Saturday, October 16, 2010. Friends of the Foundation will gather to enjoy dinner and music while raising money for a great program to benefit the health of children in our community. Tickets for the event are $75 per couple.

The Foundation’s “Jeans & Jewels” event will feature the Risse Band who has traveled throughout the Southeast wowing audiences with the greatest package of multi-talented musicians and entertainers to hit the road.

Proceeds from “Jeans & Jewels” will be used to expand Stanly Regional’s current “Passport to Fitness” program which provides a healthy lifestyles program to all 4th grade students in Stanly County. The expanded program will reach all Stanly County public school students beginning in kindergarten and following them all the way through fifth grade. The focus of this program will be to teach all children healthier habits to last a lifetime while providing children who are overweight or obese an opportunity for referral to a new family treatment program with an emphasis on preventing Type II diabetes. With support from donors, the Foundation’s “fall fundraisers” have raised more than $311,000 for health-related projects over the past few years.

Starting Wednesday, September 15 and continuing through Friday, October 15 the Stanly County Museum will have a special textile theme exhibit, “Common Threads”. The exhibit will emphasize the impact of textiles throughout history. From the beginning of time fur and animal hair have been used for clothing and household furnishings. “Common Threads” will show how a common yarn or fiber can be made into all types of clothing and household items. Throughout much of history spinning and weaving was done in the homes. The industrial revolution moved much of that activity to factories. In addition to technological changes, the industrial revolution also brought about significant social, cultural and economic change. Interesting new types of fabrics were made from materials such as paper and bamboo. In addition to the things we normally associate with textiles, today we have all types of protective clothing, carpeting, rugs, flags, balloons and containers made from a variety of natural and manmade fibers.
On Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings during the exhibit local artisans will conduct textile related demonstrations at the Stanly County Museum.

"Talmadge Moose Exhibition"

August 11 - September 3 / 2010

The public is invited to attend a special exhibition of the work of noted artist Talmadge Moose. A native of Albemarle who died in 2003, Talmadge Moose is known the world over for his pencil portraits and paintings of rural North Carolina realism.

Presented by the Stanly County Museum and sponsored by Second Street Gallery, this free exhibition will be on display at the Stanly County Museum, 245 E Main Street in Albemarle, from August 11 through September 3, 2010 during normal museum visiting hours: Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.

A special opening night reception, which is open to the public, will be held at the museum on Tuesday, August 10 from 6 pm until 8 pm. Refreshments will be served during the reception.

The exhibition will emphasize the evolution of Talmadge Moose’s artistic talent, ranging from drawings he completed in his teenage years to masterful paintings from the height of his prolific career as a free lance artist.

In the troubling days of the 1930's, Annie must live in a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Miss Hannigan. Her seemingly hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the residence of the wealthy munitions industrialist, Oliver Warbucks. Magically, she charms the hearts of the Warbucks household staff and even the cold-hearted Warbucks cannot help but learn to love this wonderful girl. He decides to help Annie find her long lost parents by offering a reward if they would come to him and prove their identity. However, Miss Hannigan, her evil brother, Rooster, and a female accomplice, plan to impersonate those people to get the reward for themselves which put Annie in great danger. Leapin’ lizards!

Like the rest of the children, Annie doesn't like the orphanage and dislikes Miss Hannigan even more. Fortunately, Annie meets and befriends Sandy, the lovable street dog, who quickly becomes part of her family and helps to distract her from the horrible life that surrounds her.When Annie is chosen to spend the Christmas holidays with the wealthy industrialist Oliver Warbucks, Miss Hannigan is infuriated that Annie will be spending the holidays in the lap of luxury. Warbucks is charmed by Annie's spunk and good spirits and is eager to adopt her, but Annie is convinced that one day her real parents will come back to claim her.

This July marks the 230th Anniversary of Stanly County's own Revolutionary War Battle,
"The Battle of Colson's Mill"

The Anniversary event will be held at "The Fork Farm & Stables", just south of Norwood, NC, on Saturday, July 17, 2010.

A Memorial Ceremony will take place at 10:00am which is sponsored by (Colson's Mill Chapter of the Society of Sons of the American Revolution and the Yadkin River Patriots Chapter of the Society of Daughters of the American Revolution).

Artisans and Craftsmen such as Wood Turners, Blacksmiths, a gunsmith and quilters will be on hand to offer demonstrations and sell their wares!

Members of Locke's Militia and the Kingsbury Artilery will also be present to fire a few volleys and educate those interested in eighteenth century military camp life!

Big Lick, N.C. – The Grascals have played with George Jones, Porter Wagoner, Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, Charlie Daniels and are just coming off the Hank Williams Jr. Rowdy Friends Tour – and will be appearing at the Big Lick Bluegrass Festival in Big Lick on Saturday, June 12.
The festival will be held at the Big Lick Festival Park in Big Lick, N.C., on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12.
Big Lick is a community on N.C. Hwy. 205 between Charlotte and Albemarle, just off N.C. Hwy. 24/27. It was named for a salt lick that is still somewhere in the woods. Any local deer can tell you its whereabouts.
The Big Lick festival has traditionally had some of the biggest names in bluegrass music – and this year the trend continues.
The Grascals. Goldwing Express. Bill Yates and The Country Gentlemen Tribute Show. Bluegrass Brothers. Deeper Shade of Blue. Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.
Fans will hear old ballads from the Bill Yates and The Country Gentlemen Tribute Show; traditional mountain music from the Bluegrass Brothers; and a more contemporary sound from The Grascals. Rising stars, The Rye Hollar Boys, are teenagers who come from a family of musicians in the N.C. mountains.
Grascals guitarist and vocalist Terry Eldredge is looking forward to the show. Organizer Jeff Branch and he have been friends since the early ‘80s. “So we’re going to put on an especially entertaining show at Big Lick,” Eldredge says. “Dolly Parton always used to say right before we took the stage, ‘Make it fun!’ That’s what we’re gonna do.”
The Grascals will be singing songs from their newest CD, “The Famous Lefty Flynn’s.” Eldredge sings the title track. “Grascals guitarist Jamie Johnson wrote a ballad with a little truth and a little fiction in it – about a fellow who lived a hard life.” he explains. “But I can’t tell you how the story ends. You’ll have to listen to find out!”
“I was very moved at the 2009 Big Lick festival,” says Bill Yates. “A man in the audience cried when he told me he thought he would never hear a voice like Charlie Waller again. He was the lead singer and guitarist for the original Country Gentlemen group. We’ll be singing some favorites.”
Yates also looks forward to the after-party jamming session behind the stage where many of the musicians, and members of the audience, pull out their guitars, banjos and whatever and play into the wee hours of the morning.
Branch likes to share some little-known tidbits about the performers.
Eldredge chews gum throughout his entire performance to keep his mouth moist. Grascals fiddle player Kristin Scott Benson and her husband, Wayne Benson, who plays the mandolin for Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, will be able to perform at the same festival, something they typically don’t get to do. She was voted the 2009 Banjo Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. And Branch points out that Frank Poindexter, dobro player for Deeper Shade of Blue, is the uncle of legendary Tony Rice who is considered the top bluegrass guitar player in America. The Big Lick Bluegrass Festival opens at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 11 with the Rye Hollar Boys, Southern Junction and Bluegrass Brothers.
On Saturday, shows start at noon with Deeper Shade of Blue, Goldwing Express, Bill Yates and Friends, Bluegrass Brothers, Russell More & IIIrd Tyme Out ending with The Grascals at 11 p.m.
Adult admission is $10 on Friday and $25 on Saturday. Reduced tickets are available after 6 p.m. on Saturday for $15. Two day passes are available through June 1 for $25.
Tickets for children ages 12-16 are $5 on Friday and $12 on Saturday. Children under 12 years of age will be admitted free.
Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Large tents will be available to provide shade. Concessions will be available.
